In August 2006 I created a Myspace group to promote Rosetta@Home on the social network.
The idea was raised in a thread and I got the permission to use the logo from someone on this forum.

Somebody asked me today wheter I'm really allowed to use the logo even though it is copyrighted. Could a moderator or a barkerlab member please confirm that I have the permission to use the logo to promote the project?

Thanks

You're fine, the image is publicly available via https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_misc.php

Ethan, it's "publicly available", but on a website that says it is copyrighted (see bottom of page). Would be good to add something, especially to the page you linked, to define terms of use more explicitly.

The copyright issue is vague at best. One would say that the entire contents of the page and all associated images related to RAH are copyright. Others would say that the design of the page is copyright, but that the images are public domain being there is no copyright mark incorporated into the image. On the other hand one could say they are copyrighted since they belong to RAH and there is no statement saying they are public domain. But then again the lack of any statement saying the images are copyright or that the contents of the page and any images on it are copyright of RAH could be inferred.

Might be best if RAH folks would add a statement saying that the images are copyright of RAH but can be used for certain things. Or that the images are public domain and can be used for anything. This would be similar to what we see out on the web all the time that the content and images are copyright of the web page that belongs to that company or organization.

I don't understand why you would make an issue out of this. This is the internet, no one cares about copyright, and if you wouldn't make an issue out of it, no one else would. Think about it; Rosetta depends on free publicity and having a positive public image. How would it look if they started hassling one of their own enthusiastic users, who is only trying to promote the project, over copyright issues?

I'm sure there are plenty of people on the internet who care about copyrights. It's attitudes like yours that give internet users bad reputations for stealing intellectual property.

Proudly Banned from Predictator@Home and now Cosmology@home as well. Added SETI to the list today. Temporary ban only - so need to work harder :)
