My buddy has Vista...we installed the current version of BOINC yesterday and !*@#(%^!@ Windows Vista keeps blocking it everytime the pc gets rebooted.

I spent about 30 minutes inside Defender trying to unblock it...the "enable" and "disable" buttons are always greyed out!!!! I try highlighting BOINC and there is no option (like right clicking or clicking the 'enable' button) to tell Vista that it's a safe program.

When we open Defender, it's not explicitly stating BOINC is blocked...it always says "in progress". If we manually run BOINC, Windows prompts us if we're really sure, and then it runs just fine. If we reboot, Vista blocks it. So Vista is blocking this on the Startup folder.

This is extremely annoying...anyone else seen this? Any way to resolve this? If so, please be explicit...don't just say "open Defender and click 'enable'" because it is greyed out. :)

***Maybe the BOINC creators (and everyone on this board as user) needs to fill out this Microsoft form claiming BOINC is to be allowed and not blocked:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/isv/fpform.aspx

Thank you very much in advance.

-Eric

p.s. no, the fix is not "just never reboot" :)

I installed it as a service on a Vista laptop and it works fine that way for me.

I guess I can try installing it as a Service.

However, I think BOINC/Rosetta should fill out that Microsoft form so this ceases to be a problem.

‘nother Vista issue is that sometimes (not always) when you re-start it’ll trash whatever wu(s) you’re working on. Be sure to click the BOINC exit tab before restarting. (Not just suspend or snooze). This forces a checkpoint.

It doesn't force a checkpoint. The science app here can only checkpoint at certain places. What shutting down BOINC does is allow everything to be stopped and the proper information be written to client_state.xml.

There's a registry hack posted in the BOINC FAQ Service to slow down Vista's shut down processes.

Personally I'd rather be safe than sorry and I shut down BOINC manually in XP and Vista.

So...any news on this topic? It's been about 2 months.

I'm not sure if it's RAH's responsibility to be managing this problem or Microsoft's...but the problem is about 11 months old and I have a bunch of computers that (unfortunately) have Vista on them yet cannot run RAH due to the fact that the computer powers on/off at least once a day and hence gives Defender a chance to block it. I tried running it as a Service and it brought the pcs to their knees. I have to revert back to a Restore Point!

Can someone from RAH reply to this thread and give us a real update on this problem?

Thanks so much!

Well the service shouldn't bring it to it's knees as it acts pretty much the same.

Try installing BOINC to c:BOINC instead of the Program Files (default) location. There are less Vista restrictions doing that.

When you run as a service, don't let BoincManager start up (since that is what is being stopped).

another solution - disable Defender -

The next version v6 of BOINC should avoid all this but it will not be until then that this will be fixed.
P.S. It has little to do with R@H all they can do is put pressure on the devs, but they are stretched and are asking for help from developers to get everything done quicker.

A few weeks ago (maybe longer) I sent the information David A needed (he didn't have nor want Defender installed) to fill out the MS form. I don't know if he's done it or not though.

I also have it installed as a service and haven't had any issues during the limited time I'm in Vista. I'm not sure what happened with your service install. Can you try with the latest version of BOINC?

Well, I had checked before on how to disable/uninstall Defender on Vista and now there finally seems to be an article:

http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/02/15/how-to-disable-windows-defender-from-starting-when-vista-boots/

I will try this soon and let you all know.
