BOINC starts up at boot-up but it doesn't start a work unit. The tray icon shows a white dot in front of it with a red dot in the center. I ran the installer to repair the program, but it still doesn't work properly. I have to exit BOINC and restart it manually before it attaches and loads any work units. I'm using Windows XP and the latest BOINC version (5.8.16). What do I have to do now?

Actually, that thread if for Rosetta problems. But it is BOINC that is in charge of when to download etc. So it sounds like either BOINC believes it has no internet connection, or the project hasn't been attached properly, or something like that.

You used the word attach. Are you using an account manager, and expecting it to attach to the project for you? Or is Rosetta already in your projects list prior to booting for the day?

When you start up and see the behavior, check Task Manager and see if boinc.exe is running.

Usually when you see the icon in the tray looking like that, it means that the different parts of BOINC can't talk to each other or only the manager is running.

Everything used to work properly and this problem just appeared in the last week or so. It just doesn't find the project and work unit anymore unless I close BOINC and then reopen it from the Start program list. I don't have to do anything else.

Have you tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling?
Do you have a registry cleaner? If you do I would run that just to clean up any errors that BOINC might have as well as windows.
Maybe CCleaner would help this? Or if you can get error guard?
These are just some ideas that might help with your problem.

Problem solved! I updated the BOINC software to the new version and everything corrected itself.
