Increase in performance compared with other AMD products = 0
A AMD Fx processor will have the same performance and was releasead on... 2005?

I didn't missed that, and you're healping me... they are launching processors with a old technology not the phenom, tricore or the quadcore...

I dont know what you are up to ? Intel just released their 6X50 CPUs, with their Core 2 technology - why dont you moan about that? that they release "old" technology and just talk about their 45nm Penryn ? But ofc the 6X50 were the biggest invention since the lightbulb, right ? ;)

Point is: there is nothing wrong it releasing such CPUs (goes for AMD and Intel), as long as there is a market that wants it. I myself would have loved to see AMD supporting even older technologies longer, read here: socket 939 dual cores (and im not alone with that)

PS: I help you again: there is your missed new technolgy : Barcelona Quad

I don't care about new technology if that technology fails to beat Intel products.

If a Yorkfield (which is also a new technology 45nm) is faster then a Barcelona, that is the one that i will buy. I don't care about the native quadcore, i care about performance/price.

This is what i was expecting from AMD... not an old processor with unlocked multiplier...

By the way, i agree with you in a point, amd should have made more x2 for 939. Now it's not the time for that. Now they should make something to compete with Intel products.

Well if you look at price to performance, I think AMD is placed pretty good still.
The QX9650 you mention in your post is around 990 € if im not wrong, AMD is no where near that with their actual CPUs. The 1,9 GHz Barcelona is @ 320 € and still can hold his position in some benchmarks against the much more expensive Xeons.

I mean, its not like im blind or something, sure the QX9650 is a great CPU and overall the actual AMD CPUs cant reach that speed, but to me thats pretty much not interesting, as I would never spend 1000 € for a CPU =)

When you go and look up the Intel pair in the Benchmarks to the AMD CPU, you will see that the AMD is placed better in the price.

But yeah overall its a pity that the higher clocked K10´s still arent out, then we could say more about the performance.

btw: I also dont know why they made such a hype around that unlocked 5000+, its not a bad thing, but nobody really was waiting for it ;)

And yes the time for socket 939 dual cores is over, I think there was just no room left for them in the pricing, when you see how many different AM2 CPUs are out there, and they are all within a price range of 150 € heh :<

If amd had launched more x2 939 processors, i would buy one. I have a 4000+ and it cannot handle the new games... and it would help me a lot with my rosetta rac :D

I just hope this phenom processor come with good performance or AMD will have problems...

By the way, amd will have to battle against this:

Not the conroe/xeons.

heh I have a 4000+ s.939 myself :] In most Games im fine tho (not talking about things like Crysis beta ofc) But say F.E.A.R. Im perfectly fine :)
btw: you still can get x2 4200+ in most stores, and now also for a reasonable price - just today i saw one for 64 €. Was thinking of exchanging my CPU, also with RAC in mind xD

But that list is obviously a tough one, at least prices will stay low I guess...
The 2,5 GHz Phenoms need to get moving, else a lot of peeps will put their money into Intel I think ^^

Nice chart Tiago. Looks like the Q9450 with 12MB cache and 2.66GHz will be the way to go in January at $316. Not sure why anyone would buy a dual core unless they were restrained by motherboard...

All the quads have only 95w TDPs except the extreme model.
Quad
QX9650 3.0 GHz 130W TDP 12MB $999

Q9950 2.83 GHz 95W TDP 12MB $530

Q9450 2.66 GHz 95W TDP 12MB $316

Q9300 2.50 GHz 95W TDP 6MB $266
Dual
E8500 3.16 GHz 65W TDP 6MB $266

E8400 3.00 GHz 65W TDP 6MB $183

E8200 2.66 GHz 65W TDP 6MB

Well actually someone who runs applications that cant benefit from multiple cores, will look for the strongest power in one core. Then its 3,16 GHz vs. 2,5 GHz for the same price.

I think most things will benefit from multicore in the future. The newest games are utilizing multicore. Crysis, Bioshock, etc.

Yes you are right, but who wants to play CRYSIS anyway ? ;)

This is an interesting discussion thread and it looks like it is ripe for some scientific process.

Would it be possible to get a couple of people to test these two processors with R@H? If we have people willing to buy or build systems, we could do team Intel and team AMD.

We could set a dollar value that could not be exceeded for either system. Each person could then make decisions as to what components to purchase. We could move this discussion toward some real-world experience and help the R@H project at the same time.

In my opinion, the price of the systems would be the only limitation. Overclocking should be permitted and encouraged as the goal would be the highest average RAC and perhaps total credit for each team for 1 year or 3 months.

We might want to limit these teams to only new systems (I am not sure how this can be done).

Anyway, it might be nice to have some friendly competition on this topic.

Paul
Thx!

Paul
