AMD prepares more price cuts AMD IS PLANNING some more price cuts. The firm and its competitor have been aggressively competing on price for some time now, a situation which lead an AMD spokesman to announce last month that the firm had no plans to cut prices again. Indeed, just a couple of weeks ago Gary Bixler, AMD's director of marketing for North America, told EE Times: "This year we made it a point to provide the channel with what it wants, which is a predictable business, a stable business." "We haven't announced our next price move yet," he said, "so take that at face-value - another one is not imminent." But if it wasn't imminent then, it is now. A missive from Bixler's boys in AMD's "North America Regional Marketing Team" to its channel partners says the firm will cut the price of some of its socket AM2, Athlon 64 X2s on August 13th. The Athlon 64 X2 4000+, the 4200+ and the X2 4400+ will all have their prices cut. The firm isn't saying by how much yet, however. Yesterday the firm also cut the prices of some of its older, Rev E, Opterons. With a bit of luck Intel will follow suit and the firms will soon be giving processors away with packets of cornflakes. |

So I guess it does make a difference then from all the silence... Compiler to support AMD quad core Barcelonas THE PORTLAND GROUP said its compilers and development tools now support quad core "Barcelona" Opterons. The PGI compilers will take advantage of AMD's direct connect architecture, will be able to use the 128-bit wide floating point units, avoid merge dependencies, and use functions to take advantage of the ABM and SSE4a instructions. They will also support software pre-fetching to complement the level one data cache prefetch hardware and other features of the Barcelona chips. Version 7.--7 will generate code at the quad cores, and Portland will introduce version 7.1 of the compilers and tools this autumn to include extra features and optimisations for the quad core Opterons. |

So I guess it does make a difference then from all the silence... well, at 2Ghz, the compiler does not make any difference ... who? |

well, at 2Ghz, the compiler does not make any difference ... It probably would on systems that have 4 and 8 cores running. Will the Barcelona processors even support SSE4 or does SSE4a mean something else like a SSE3+? It will also be nice when new Intel after Penryn comes out with native quad-core design and on-die DDR3 memory controller. That will finally give us some scalability with hopefully clock speed as well. |

We will know if it is really naive the 10th of September. who? |

Is that 10th September in UK too or just US? |

Hello folks, sorry to butt in, but I found this thread very interesting. Please advise on the following:- Server built... Case, 600w PSU, 6x Samsung 250gb, LG DVD RW, FD, 4gb RAM, 4x Samsung 250gb NAS, Windows Home Server O/S. I have been using AMD for past 16 years but I am not biased. would just like a good recommendation for a quad - server will be in heavy use, both internally & externally. Recommendations/comments appreciated. Thanks |

Hello folks, sorry to butt in, but I found this thread very interesting. http://www.legitreviews.com/article/521/1/ Honestly - Barcelona is still going to be behind the mark when released. I'd stick with Intel, since it seems as though AMD is going to be the next 3dfx. AMD systems generally have higher memory bandwidth, but Intel systems have faster computational speed. If you know what your limitations are going to be, then you have your answer. On that note - I do a lot of simulations for my research (molecular dynamics, DFT, etc), and I have yet to see our dual quad-core Xeon X5355 systems be limited by memory requirements (at least not that we've been able to notice). Performance on our machines scales as expected with such a setup, so we haven't seen any additional bottlenecks thus far. |

Naive Quad Core Actually, I suppose the current Intel offering (non-native) would be the naive quad-core ;) |

since it seems as though AMD is going to be the next 3dfx. Well if AMD are going to be the next 3dfx then that make the two leading graphics chipset AMD (ATI) and NVIDIA (3DFX) are down the drain ;-) Since NVIDIA bought 3dfx :p Team mauisun.org |

In my opinion, Intel just sell you the engineering samples practically, rather than trying to perfect the technology first, like AMD do. Intels current Q-core is just 2 dual-core on a single chip... |

Intel has been filling a need for efficient powerful CPUs for virtualization. Next month they will be releasing a true quad core @ 45 nano. Jmarks |

In my opinion, Intel just sell you the engineering samples practically, rather than trying to perfect the technology first, like AMD do. Intels current Q-core is just 2 dual-core on a single chip... But it works and works pretty well. Just look at the Quad's in the Rosetta@home list they churn out results. Who 'really' cares what is actually going on in the processor... it what happends once it's come out ... Team mauisun.org |

Who 'really' cares what is actually going on in the processor... it what happends once it's come out ... It matters because the price/performance ratio of AMD's is much higher in most cases |
