I have just joined gridrepublic, so I'm very new to the site. Used to be a member of grid.org.
My problem is that when I am allowing my computer to be used I find that my processor (Intel 6600) is running flat out, this is not acceptable, as it starts to get hot and also slows down my other applications.
Is there a way of setting a limit on processor usage?

-Use at most
-Enforced by version 5.6 and greater 100 percent of CPU time

set to lower than 100 and it will run cooler.

As you se from the text you must have Boinc ver. 5.6 or higher.

Im running BOINC 5.10.20.( Sorry is that higher, i thought it was higher? but im not sure of the notation used)

I have adjusted preferences as suggested above, the CPU per task manager regularly hits 100%. This doesnt seem to cause instability but does slow the responsivenes of 'live' user sessions. I am a light user of system resources most of the time so its not usually a problem. FYI i have set max 75% thru 85%, and see similar behaviour.

shaun, that's how it works. There is not way to tell the operating system (Windows?) to run a task at 70%. So you have to run the task and halt the task periodically. So you will see 1 second windows where the task runs at 100%, and, depending upon how the timing works out, you might also see 1 second windows at 0%. But the overall effect is a cooler CPU.

If BOINC is conflicting with your use of the machine, you can either set your General Preference to not run while the computer is in use, or you might reduce the amount of memory BOINC is allowed to use while the computer is in use.

I can't find a hint of how to get my CPU usage HIGHER. It appears that of the 2 cores of the AMD 64 chip the machine loafs at 2-4%, and also memory usage barely hits 20% of RAM. The ACER is here dedicated for BOINC apps 24hrs a day,
It seems like more could be pushed out of the machine!! Any tips on this subject appreciated.

somewere in the settings, i forgot were exactly is a option: use at most N processors, it could be that its set to low to your preference, you might try to set this preference higher, to 16 i.e. so it uses all your cores if you have 16 or less ;)
