Careful...slave ownership is illegal in the US since the mid-19th century. Especially those with blue shirts! =;^)

Yo Paydirt,

can you contact me by email? I'm at gerryr @ floodlight.org. I need to contact you regarding the system we talked about earlier in this thread.

I'm waiting for the G0 revision of the Intel Q6600. For now, i'm only seeing the B3 revision. I hope in the end of the month i can find them in stores.

Courtesy of Slickdeals.net:

Dell Dimension 9200 Core 2 Quad Q6600, 80GB HD, 2GB DDR2, 128MB nVidia GeForce 8300 GS, DVD+/-RW , Vista Basic $649

Probably the cheapest quad-core cruncher your gonna see for a while.

Ask for the free upgrade to Vista Premium. (Place the order online, and then immediately telephone Dell Small Business, and they will do the free upgrade)

Free Shipping (I assume limited to mainland US)

Just FYI, you cannot OC Dell machines via BIOS. So take that into consideration.

If you want to overclock wait for the G0 revision... Less temperature (20Âșc) and less TDP.

It's almost a different processor.

A Slickdealer notes:

Dell seems to be playing around with the configuration pricing again. Yup, a similar setup for this quad-core system is now $619 (pre-tax) w/o the monitor.

It's now $30 cheaper than the original deal with double the HD space, but only a DVD-ROM.

I preferred the free DVD burner upgrade myself, since I was planning on switching out the HD anyway. But for anyone else who is happy with 160GB (7200rpm) this deal did get a little better.

I was able to nab of couple of these babies the other day; no doubt they will chew up some WUs pretty quick. I suppose the question now becomes whether they should be loaded with XP, Vista Basic, or Vista Premium. They come with Basic, but others have mentioned on the links below this post that if you call Dell they will upgrade to Premiuim for free. But on the same page it is mentioned that XP is a better environment for multi-tasking and stuff that uses more than one core. So, which should I put into these puppies for boinc? This is a bit beyond my pay grade.

I wonder if all those cheap quad cores coming online is the reason for the recent teraflops jump. It is at 58 right now after being stuck around 50 for a few weeks.

If you don't need Vista Premium (don't do anything but crunch on them), don't bother upgrading from Basic.

Keep Vista.
XP from the days of single cores/dual processors and patched up to run better on multiprocessors/cores... Vista's get better managment techs etc in it.

P.S. Which link below (above for me )

Thanks for the advice, fluffy. Here's the link, but I think I may have either misread the XP part or followed the link somewhere else for that idea about XP being better.

Something to consider with XP vs. Vista is RAM. Depending on how much of it you have and how many Rosetta threads you are planning to run, you might be better with XP which (afaik) uses less RAM.

Just saw this on SlickDeals.net, fwiw:

For the people who have gotten their 9200 quad already; can you comment on its performance. There is this guy in the dell forums who is claiming that the Dell quad is running 30% slower than a non DELL quad core..

Atrocious Computing Performance of Core Quad Q6600 in XPS 410/Dimension 9200

I can't give you any numbers yet; perhaps in a week or so when results are being validated on a more consistent basis.

Also, your link is to the dell forums page login. Can you point it to the article?

yeah, looks like they've been moving the thread around a bit...

generally i take things like this with a grain of salt, but i know gerry had picked up one or two, and was curious as to what he saw, specifically related to use as a boinc cruncher...

Found the Dell thread

You know, I was just thinking this morning that since I crunch for five different projects at present, though Rosy gets the biggest share, do you want me to hit the 'no new tasks' button on the other projects for a week or so, or would this help?
