I did read the faq for having two or more computers with the same account but did not see anything that spoke exactly to my situation. When I log in to preferences from either machine I can see that both computers are recognized and both are doing work. The preference files are exactly the same, however, no matter which computer I use to login. The preferences only seem to apply to my quad 2.5PPC. I would like to set different preferences for my Macbook Pro I.E. fewer processors, don't run on battery power, etc. Am I missing something dumb here?

Each machine can reside at one of a predefined number of locations. BOINC calls them HOME, SCHOOL, WORK and default. Simplest way to tell which location a given machine is considered to be located at is to look at the very top of your BOINC messages from when it started up.

It will have a section something like this:

So, if I wish to change the settings on the above machine, I have to either go to the project website, look at my hosts, pick that one, and change it's location... or, when I'm changing the General BOINC Preferences, I need to be changing preferences for the location called "home".

And then the changes take effect after you update to the project.

Shoot, I must be missing something here. I had noticed the different preference settings for home and away, as it were, but assumed that the server would notice that the IP adresses would be the same. Anywho, I tried your advice and was easily able to set up the different "locations" such that the MBP would only run when not on battery, use less cpu time to avoid the hat issues etc. But when I log in with it the server it still treats it as if it is my quad and runs it full bore. Actually, it is worse worse than just running my quad settings because it will also not suspend use when I become active. Do you know if the Boinc server differentiates a location by intenal lan adress or by external IP adress? Right now both of these machine pick up their LAN IP by dhcp from my airport extreme station, but I could manually assign an ip if that would help.

No the IP address should not matter.

Did you get the messages to show the new location?? If not, go to the participants link right above here on the message board, then click on your computers, and find the one that is your laptop and click it's host ID. Now scroll all the way down to the bottom of that page and make sure it has the "location" you desire. If you change the location, you will have to update to the project for the change to occur and then it will pick up the preferences you have specified.

Nope, Darn.

By following the pattern suggested and updating, both of my computers clearly are designated as home and work respectively. Now, however, editing the preference file has made the MBP's preferences with fewer cpu's the norm. I still can't seem to get a custom preference for each machine. The MBP, moreover, still runs continuously amd does not cease and desist when I become active as it did with the quad.

Are you using an account manager such as BAM?? If so, they control the preferences.

No. Just plain old Boinc. Like i said it is weird. I can look at both sets of preferences and match them up to each machine. Both have "run by preferences" checked in Boinc manager.They are correctly labled home and work. The "Home" is the quad and the "work "is the MBP. The MBP is only supposed to have 60 percent of the processors but even as I type both are running flat out and should not even be running at all as I am active.

I see you are using BOINC 5.8.17. When all else fails, revert to the latest recommended release. The odd numbered releases are beta.

Do I lose projects when I do this? Or should I wait till I am done running the current projects?

No, you should be able to just exit BOINC to shut things down, install the older version, and restart. To be on the safe side, backup the entire BOINC install directory first.
