I am not sure if this is supposed to be some kind of a workaround, however as I said - I run boinc on an unattended computer (a Linux router to be precise, all it has to do is routing packets, draw interface traffic graphs, pop some SNMP stats etc.). Any workarounds which require human intervention are unacceptable here. It was not intended to be a workaround, merely an observation. Which I hope may assist the project developers in finding the origins of errors like these. -- R. A. Mostol |

Looks like rechenknecht123's task in question is this one. It looks like the task was restarted 5 times without reaching a checkpoint and so it was ended. This is part of Rosetta watching out for you. They figure if you've begun the same task 5 times without making any progress, then the task is not well suited for your machine and so it ends it and reports it in. Looks like you never completed the first model and so no output file was produced. So the question becomes, what would cause me to restart a task many times without making progress. Any time a task is removed from memory, it must restart. So, if you do not keep tasks in memory while preempted, then any preemption will cause a restart. Preemption could be from other BOINC tasks taking their share of CPU time, or if you configure BOINC (see General Preferences) to not run while computer is in use, and to not remain in memory while preempted, then each time someone sits down to the computer, the task is removed from memory and must be restarted. This is why the message in the results page suggests "Keep application in memory while preempted." Also, any time the computer is powered off, or BOINC is exited (not just closed, but exited), the task must restart. Once a model is completed, that progress is saved, and would be reflected in your CPU time reported. There may also be checkpoints within a model for some tasks. In short, your machine began the task, and ended it again before allowing it to run long enough to reach the end of a model, or reach a checkpoint. No one is going to look into this are they? The way I understand it, you get the average of everyone running the same group of WUs (SEARCH_PAIRINGS_-1dhn-blah-blah-blah....). It certainly isn't fair when a statistically abnormal WU comes along in the group, as you found out. I doubt you'll ever get enough significantly shorter-than-normal WUs to ever make it up. I have had two of those with very low credit, both ran way past the target run time. Looks like I have a 3rd running now, it has a target run time of 4 hours. It was up to ~97% at 3:56 when the percent complete dropped to 50%. Looks like it will run for 8 hours, and from the others that did this I will not get any cedit for the last 4 hours. Looking at differant computers and the post in this thread I see that several others have this happening also. I have a task, which needs lots of time more than the target CPU run time of 2 hours. It took 4,5 hours to reach 95%! The speed fell down after reaching 80% after 1,6 hours. Another problem series? From 3 different machines! I even pulled a single core mobile xp machine yesterday and replaced it with another dual core operton, and my rac continues to fall? i have this same wu unit 2K3E_HEXAMER_CHAPERONE_DOCKING_1682_25103 now and when i opened the graphics window (no, not screensaver) i see the wu stuck on model 5 step 521. The percent is still climbing but there is no graphics activity, no new values in rmsd or accepted energy. I'll let it run until watchdog shuts it off or it completes but this is weird activity. Been looking at it now for 5 minutes and no change in values. |

I am seeing Rosetta WU's crashing the graphics again. This after a long period of working very nicely. Running with BOINC 5.9.4 on winXP. Have to disable the screensaver in order to keep my machines from locking up. When locked up, I can usually do a ctrl-alt-del to get the task manager and/or show the taskbar and see that a Rosetta WU is running. Closing the BOINC mgr, then exiting the BOINC process gives back full control, then I can start all over. |
