Hello. I'm ussing rosetta. and I also have an Outpost firewall. The problem is - sometimes my firewall gives me a report of atack from baker lab. it says "detected a nuke atack from either bakerlab rosetta, or IP adress 140.142.20.112 - which is an address for bakerlab...
Can anyone explain to me what is that nuke atack from bakerlab, should I allow it, and how.

All BOINC activity on the internet is originated at your PC. Just like your browser does. All other activity done via TCP/IP is done on your machine's loopback connection. This is basically a way for one program on your machine to use TCP/IP to interact with another program. BOINC Manager uses this loopback connection to interact with Rosetta as it runs. So, BOINC applications establish themselves as a "server" on your machine, but only within the loopback.

The firewall can't know where the packets are coming from, only where they claim to be coming from. Someone may be trying to trick you into accepting the packets by forging the return address. Or they may be trying to attack bakerlab indirectly by prodding your computer to send a lot of packets to bakerlab.

I think you should keep your shields up.

You should update to Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00)

If you have used a WinXP disk twice, you can still buy a new one that has WinXP Service Pack 2 on it (it will come with a new product key) so you can just enter the new product key during the upgrade process (it does screw with AVG though, if you are using AVG I can help you, just post here again), and of course doesn't come with any warranty that it won't kill your machine or all of your information, all I can tell you is that it didn't kill that one that I did this on. If you do this, don't reboot and load from the CD, but enter the CD while you are in windows and then auto play the CD.

If you are a licensed XP user, then upgrade now, also upgrade your virus and malware utilities.

The WinXP Home Service pack 2 CD cost $180 AU, if that's too much I would suggest you have a go at linux Ubuntu should be okay, if you can find a live addition on a PC magazine that would be best as you could find out if it's for you and your hardware.

Of course it could just be someone that you annoyed, a DoS with IP spoofing isn't that difficult to do unfortunately.

I have the same problem with agnitum outpost firewall and rosetta. You should install service pack 2, but not for that reason, becoase it is not the problem. What ever I did it still doesn't trust when connecting to adresses 140.142.20.103,140.142.20.111, 140.142.20.112. I also run einstein@home and climateprediction@home and I don't have any problems. I tried outpost forum, I'll see if they can help.
