From ther Boinc message board:
for the past few days 11/15/06 the BONIC Manager can not fine the local host. all processing stops. running 5.4.11. on 24/7. running 4 or more projects round robin. only way to get working again is to exit and re-start. any idea why this is happing. any one else have the same issue?

I have had this same issue since I started using BOINC over a year ago. It happens randomly most of the time. It is really annoying to exit and restart BOINC to get the projects running again. I am on the most current version of BOINC and Rosetta and it has happened on more than one of my computers.

Ed/Darin, please see the active discussion on the subject of BOINC manager losing contact with the boince.exe.

One of my machines (running Linux) is giving errors on ALL WUs from 5.41 - this never happened with 5.40. Example WU: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/result.php?resultid=50074717

BOINC 5.41 has now crashed 3 times today on my machine. I only have data on the last 2 because the first one caused a hard freeze which required me to cold boot my system. I don't have data because I shut my system down every night, but BOINC has been bouncing like a ball for the last couple of weeks, frankly, and I've had to hard boot more than once. I'm hoping this data will help fix the problem.

Here's today's log data:

Hi Hedera, did you have the Rosetta graphics on when these errors happened? I definitely have seen the same error code before from different hosts and from different WUS in a very random way. I am just trying to collect more information to see if we can find any clue of the cause for the problem. The graphic lock-ups have been reported most frequently with the recent rosetta applications and we are investigating it. Wondering if this also applies to the error you have encounted.

Sorry about that - hit the "post" button before I was done. As I was saying, I normally run the BOINC graphics screen saver, I should have remembered to mention that. I've been coming back to my machine and finding the screen saver frozen, but most of the the time I can pull up the Windows Task Manager and kill the "not responding" routine, which clears the screen. That's what happened with both of those.

There have been a lot of graphics-crashing in Rosetta lately. I suggest not using the graphics at all until it clears up. It's safest that way.

With regret, I've turned on another screen saver. Somebody please post here when it's safe to run graphics again? I do enjoy the BOINC graphics.

Hi, it looks a problem of not getting new application correctly. Does this still happen if you force a clean update to get the 5.41 application again?

It was actually a fresh install to begin with, but so far the 2 current WUs have been going for several hours without any problems.

With regret, I've turned on another screen saver. Somebody please post here when it's safe to run graphics again? I do enjoy the BOINC graphics.

There have been a lot of graphics-crashing in Rosetta lately. I suggest not using the graphics at all until it clears up. It's safest that way.

Think of it this way - Rosetta crunches faster with the graphics off :)

I was wrong. It just crashed on another WU again. Will try re-attaching to see if it helps.

The failure rate for the application 5.41 has been normal compared to the previous version. Hopefully re-attaching will help.

Thanks for your reporting and at least we confirm one more case that those error codes are somehow graphic-reltated.

I think you can always hit "show graphics" to look at the simulated protein move around whenever you want. As a project team member, I feel a little bit embasrassed to instruct users to turn off the screensaver because of these graphic problems. If anyone has any clue on what may go wrong and what may be done to improve, please let us know. I googled those error codes and it turned out the most revelant entires are all from different BOINC projects ( of course R@H is among them).

The next one I ran after the failed one (On the same machine), Ran fine with the graphics off. I was afraid it was that graphics glitch again. Rosetta is the only project I run that I will turn the graphics on and leave (On my old machine), Just because I like to glance at it occasionally as it runs. I know it slows the time down on it, But when Im running Rosetta on my older p4 with ME. Speed is something lacking regardless LoL.. Plus, It looks good on the monitor in the background. :)

It didn't. More WUs crashed throughout the night. I'll now have to detach from Rosetta@Home and attach another project to it.
