I have two machines behind a corporate firewall which cannot get work for some reason. They seem to download most of the software and I thought everything was via port 80, but perhaps there is something on a different port ?

I don't see any errors in the log but they never crunch any Rosetta at all, even if it's the only project attached..

Actually there is an error

It shouldn't matter what port it runs off of should it? Usually traffic iniated from behind the firewall isn't blocked, and since Boinc initiates communication with the server, firewall rules shouldn't come in to play.

I am by no means an expert, I just know we have pretty strict rules and didn't have problems with our install.

You would think...unfortunately the people running our firewall are somewhat over zealous. I've argued the point many times but they insist on blocking inward and outward. Took me 2 months to get them to allow ssh from my linux box there. Even then they put in a single rule allowing only from that particular IP address to another external IP address I have :( (but from there I can get to my home machines and anywhere else)

I may have gotten around this problem anyway, by sftping the bbdep file manually. Looks like it is running a rosetta unit now..

Port 80 is used for most communications with the project servers. Port 443 is used if the password is being exchanged (happens during the attach wizard).

Ports 1043 and 31416 are used for remote control of a BOINC client. 1043 is preferred and 31416 is a fall back. These ports need to be opened inbound to the BOINC client that is being controlled remotely (they should probably NOT be opened inbound through a firewall from the general web).

Still doesn't explain the problem I get. http and https are allowed. I don't need to remotely control this particular client, so I don't really care about 1043 or the fall back.

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that 1043 and31416 are used for local control as well, but your symptoms to not match a problem with these ports (the symptom is all blank tabs and the status bar stating disconnected).

This sounds like it may have something to do with my problem...My laptop at home refuses to attach to the Rosetta@home project. My home desktop and my work computer didn't have any trouble, but this one computer is driving me nuts. When I input the project address, it asks me for a http/socks proxy (which I don't have). It's like the port on which it's trying to communicate is blocked.

This laptop is running XP Home (SP2). I have checked the firewall settings, and I don't see anything which looks suspicious. In addition, I added exceptions in the firewall rules for every boinc-related .exe I could find, and it's still no good. Anyone have any ideas?

With XPSP2, you may have to allow BOINC.exe to act as a server. You may have to poke holes for 1043 and 31416.

I run Windows XP Home SP2 and I didn't have to add boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe to the allowed programs of Windows Firewall, but I did add it to Windows OneCare Beta.

Are sure the laptop isn't using a proxy program to make you secure on public hotspots?

Bob Bird: I had this problem a few days ago. I finally fixed it when i searched for everything related to boinc and deleted it. I then did a fresh install and it worked fine. I think that there may be a file somewhere telling your computer to check for that. I only had this problem after i tried to upgrade from a previous boinc version. Good luck.

Hey Bob,
Open BOINC Manager and under "options" make sure the HTTP and Socks proxy settings are unchecked.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Someone must have seen my message and changed something behind the scenes, because within a day of posting, the problem mysteriously went away. I made no further changes to my configuration, hardware, or software. Now all my computers are on board.
