I haven't had any work for two days but these messages seem to be saying I don't need any.

It mean you hit the update button.
It will get work when it needs it, if you have plenty of tasks in your queue already from whatever projects you do then it doesn't need it.

To check and create a request for more work you should actually use Advanced-> retry communications.
