I just got the rosetta_graphics_beta 4.79 application with a WU. It looks good and seems to work well. I saw little decrease in the calculation speed while I ran it. Of course I only ran it a few minutes, twice. I didn't want to press my luck :-)

Oh, Purple Rabbit, you are so lucky! :-)

I think you have got all the luck for the whole team! ;-)

And yes, you guys, David and Jack, you're doing a great job! Thanks! :-)

Us wabbits love pretty pictures :-) I'm glad I won the WU lottery and was alert enough to watch it for a bit while it was on my computer. It's gone now...sigh...no more pretty pictures. Time for a carrot break.

An addendum: My machine is new. It's a 3.4GHz P4 with 1GB memory and a GeForce 6800-Ultra on a PCI-E bus. Other machines may have different results, but mine worked great. Send me another one!

If it's not too late, you can suspend the WU so that it won't get processed. That way, you can resume it when you have a chance to watch it.

i think something related to a boinc project crashed my puter because when i moved the mouse to wake it up, i saw some kind of dialog box for a half second then the stupid thing restarted. looking at what was crunching, it doesn't seem like it ran very long after i left for work.

thus, i watched it crunch for a few minutes on the graphics work unit. very cool! it does wiggle around a lot at the beginning and then settles down.

great work rosetta team!

I just had a Graphics Beta Work unit crash on me. I'm running BOINC as a service and went to show graphics through BOINC Manager. The work unit crashed with:

- exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)
***UNHANDLED EXCEPTION****
Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x77F4B739 read attempt to address 0x0023E008
0: Stackwalker not initialized (or was not able to initialize)!

This server (3.4GHz P4 550, Windows 2003 SBS, 1GB RAM) hasn't trashed a work unit for a long time, until now.

I got one of the graphics jobs on my dual AMD machine at home.. It looks really cool and seems to be working fine.

Anybody else had this problem?
I will consult with DK to see if we can figure out what might have gone wrong.

I would test it if I had a graphics WU. Is there a way I can ensure I get one?

Apparently this is tricky within the boinc framework. But very soon (today?) all new Work Units will have the graphics executable. We will let you know when these new Work Units are being distributed.

My WU crunched just fine and I got credit for it and everything.

Can't wait untill they all have graphics.

I got one WU with graphics at 3am while I was sleeping so there's not much I can say, can I?

What king of beta testing is this? How can it test if it interfere with other program or graphic in use or is compatible with my card. I think the beta test will be on when and only when all WU have graphics.

Before we use the graphics executable with all Work Units, we want to make sure it doesn't crash more often than the non-graphics version. So we've sent out 1000 graphics WUs to see what the failure rate is. So far it is very low, and things look good. You are right that we won't have a true test until everybody has a graphics WU. We're moving incrementally towards that.

So this is mostly a beta-test from our end at the moment. We are also making a few tweaks to the graphics before we send out the next version.

Working on my 2nd gfx WU right now and no problems so far.

Just two suggestions / questions:

Is it possible, that the gfx window doesn't close between two WUs? I mean, it's not a big problem to restart the gfx again, but for a continous presentation / watching of R@H it's just a bit annoying.

Are you thinking about implementing a percentage / time counter in the gfx as well? I'd just like to be able to tell how far a WU has advanced and for how long it has been running without having to switch to the BOINC manager.

Great job folks!

The graphics code is currently a part of the whole application. The executable is stopped and restarted for each Work Unit, so it ends when the work unit ends. I will look at the other screen savers and see how they deal with this.

I'm not sure, but I think if you run in screen saver mode the graphics will restart spontaneously with the new Work Unit.

The next version of the screen saver will include percentage complete.
