Your computer is faster than most my crunchers and a lot faster than the copmuter I'm typing on now.

It also beats hands down Rivers computers :-). It maybe old but its as good as most of hour computers. Also a lot of us know the problems with dial-up...

I notice you said you use 4hrs task lengths, you may want to set it longer to ease the amount of data you are downloading, I would set it to as long as you can so it will still be done in just under a week (good old real everyday time)

P.S. Computers running WindowsXP are far far more robust than Win98, it's a different league. 24/7 servers can and do run on it. Win98 was designed for use in the homem so reboots and crashes are not really a problem. WindowsXP was designed for everything so has to not crash and is designed (or was) to reduce the amount of rebooting you need to do. A virus porgram should never need to reboot just for a normal update, maybe in Win98, but not WinXP.

I thought that this was because Bill Gates wanted to get the full value for the money he spent on patenting bugs, reboots, and crashes, and of course copyrighting the blue screen.

The windows "malicious software removal kit" which comes out monthly on win update, including for XP, insists on a reboot. Hence the assertion that if you use win Update you will need to reboot every month.

There is some sense in this - a malicious software removal program that runs between the boot loader and the OS load is better placed to catch some malware. However it also destroys the possibility oif XP boxes getting thousand day uptimes as is not considered unusual on linux.
