Has anyone else noticed that in the last week or more the new users per day to R@H has increased dramtically? What's up with this? But despite the increase, the teraflops has not changed. :(

I think it is because SETI sent out e-mails to its members to re-attatch and so they discovered other projects and SIMAP which only has temporary work now.

I don't know why the teraflops have been stable.

Another possibility is the successful premature end of SIMAP, and the crunchers formerly 100% SIMAP had to look for another project. Rosetta is a fine choice for them.

37.9 Teraflops, highest I've seen. I guess all those new users are starting to make a difference!

38.1 teraflops now. Yep, definitely going up. Great! :)

If the new users are multip-project people and either have a large cache or run their Rosetta WU for 24hr cpu (time shared with other projects) then there could be a delay of up to a week before we see their first credits.

My guess is that this is part (and only part) of the reason for the rise in teraflops to lag behind the user count.

btw, LHC has work today, and I will be curious to see if this affects Rosetta noticeably. That project rarely has work, and in the past when it has provided work for a week at a time it is been noticeable here. More often there is not enough work to go round, in which case the effect here is hardly noticable.

Just a fun thought, what if Seti finds extraterrestrial life and its goal is achieved? (Finds over remaining out of work because it's only natural that other life forms exists up or down there)

Where would all those users divert their computing power? Oh my... Yes...

Not only that, but

We'd get David to commission a version of Rosetta that would run on the ET computers. Especially if first contact meant that *their* SETI grid was no longer needed either...

No, because most the members would not even notice they had ;-) Also there are always more ET type things to find.

Then we would get to start trying to decode the signals...

My thought on this is that humanity should try to fix its problems by itself, rather than finding other species with a so-called cure-for-all. I understand that SETI had a earlier start, but, overall, I'm dissapointed how these projects are advancing.

While understanding that the following statement would limit one's option to free choice, a BOINC client should be automatically installed in every OS. Looking over boincstats, ~ 834 000 users isn't that much. My whole country has maybe 5 times the computer users having at least one PC under their control. So, I believe, worldwide, the number of users may be 100 times or 200 times this number.

These projects are still widely unknown, while they are widely beneficial, and most users are widely ignorant, which isn't an excuse when somebody suffers from an illness of some kind (and again I'm putting an accent on projects here on BOINC that are health-related; my opinion being that other projects right now aren't a priority, just not to say they are a complete waste of computing power) that hasn't a cure yet.

My words are not here to accuse or belittle others (or other projects), this is just my glimpse of the present. It's almost 2007, 7 years after that whole 2k stuff and we don't even have widely-run MagLev trains, still there are poor countries, and underfed people. And I believe democracy is to blame, because there you have free will, including the choice of being ignorant of real problems. Democracy should be about having choices but without chosing nothing.

This could deviate to Iraq war as well, while being in a country that has nothing to do with either US or Iraq, living in an ex-communist country, from this all I understand how missinformed people are and how bad it is to live under a regime of control. With that I add that US did the right thing, even though some locals there aren't understanding it all and fight the US forces (there are more countries with soldiers there than US, I know this).

As for total regimes, I believe they are utterly useless in the manner that is a total waste to control a mass of people, when you could have more power trying to control solutions for worldwide problems. If Hussein put his people to finding a cure for AIDS, and they would've found it, we'd all be under his rule in this field, and I don't believe this is a little problem. But... Stupid people do stupid, and sometimes unimportant things, leaders included.

Again, I say, that all projects should change their attitudes and take things more in a Microsoft-marketing kind of way. That is, pushing its product on everyone, everywhere (and this is free, so the big money-issue is not a problem here). As a last argument which isn't intended for already-familiar BOINC users, the impact of process prioritisation is ~= 0, that meaning you can do whatever at the computer without having to wait longer for programs to load, nor having less FPS in FPSs (this time with the meaning of First Person Shooters). I would appreciate MS incorporating this app in the kernel (!!) of future OSs. I would applaud that.

There's no excuse being ignorant; sometimes being bad makes a lot of good.

(this all was said with RAM consumtion and HDD usage in mind)

P.S. One more thought: even if an ET finds us, and/or we make contact, I don't believe that an ETI (extra-terestrial intelligence, I don't know any other way of abreviating this) that can do inter-stellar travel would want to help such a mainly stupid higher life form organism (humanity) that cannot solve its problems. I mean, there are some of us teaching monkeys to communicate, but this is just a curiosity, rather than a goal. I think this case applies for us too, us being the monkeys for ETIs.

But BOINC does effect latency of application, possible harddrive slowdown and is known to effect some games especially as BOINC have little control of what people write to run under BOINC. When Rosetta@home crashes it can lock the computer (with current bad workunits)
Of course all this still neglects the fact of who is going to pay for the extra use of electricity, the increased computer noise and the warming (and maybe necessary use of room cooling = more corst etc) of the room.

Are you ?

That is why it has to be a choice.

Of course would could help prevent a large amount of cancers and other illnesses if people just stopped smoking, but they don't <rolleyes>

Wow!

I reckon I'd enjoy a discussion on any of the paragraphs I have quoted from.

But none of them belong here in the Crunching thread. If you (or anyone else) makes these tantalising posts in the Cafe board I will respond. As will others, I am sure!

If there are any at all.

Two intelligent species in the galaxy at once is an even more unlikely number than one. But one is a possibility...
