Hey everyone, I have been thinking about doing a little upgrading of my system, as it is now going on being a few months shy of 2 years old. It is a Gateway 7200XL, which had long ago been upgraded to 2 Gigs of RAM. I have added another 250 Gig HD as well. Now however, I think it may be processor upgrade time. The system came with a Intel (South Lake) 915G Motherboard and a Pentium 4 550 Processor. So my question is, what is the best processor to upgrade to without changing motherboards? I am thinking something along the lines of a Pentium D 945. I mean, that is about as far as I can go with that motherboard, right? Even though my MB is a socket 775, that doesn’t mean I can stick a Core 2 Duo in there, correct. Or can I? I just won’t get the advantages of the faster Front Side Bus speeds of the Core 2’s? Can you tell, all the new CPUs of late have gotten me a little confused? Anyway, I would appreciate any thoughts you wonderful people may have that will help me crunch, just a little more hardily. Thanks, Joel~ |

Don't know offhand, but you might want to look at Intel's site for the specs on the motherboard, and see what it supports. |

Hey everyone, Pentium 4 550 is a 3.4GHz CPU so only upgrade is really the dual core version. Pentium D 960 is probably the fastest Pentium for that motherboard http://indigo.intel.com/compare_cpu/default.aspx?familyID=1 might help you. And find you motherboard http://indigo.intel.com/mbsg/compare.aspx?orgID=16&aryAttrID=119,123 Team mauisun.org |

About a month ago I built my own system with an E6600, and there were very few motherboards that would support this Core 2 Duo CPU. Evidently the voltage requirements are different from a Pentium 4. I very much doubt that your 2 year old motherboard would support Core 2 Duo. (Maybe with a BIOS revision, but I still doubt it.) |

Just wanted someone to back me up on that. Thanks again. Joel~ |

I'd wait for a CPU upgrade... Intel will come out with the new Core 2 Quad (4 cores... wow!) in november, so probably the Core 2 Duo will be cheaper |

That's why I gave you the links ;-) It shows you what each board supports, your chipset is too old. Team mauisun.org |

And if you want to go all the way, you can probably get a 4-core CPU around Q1 of 2007 (AMD might release their K8L around that time too) and *really* be on the cutting edge :) I currently have a A64 3000+@1.8ghz, and I think that a Core 2 Quad@2.6ghz would crunch about 10-12 times faster (based on quick math I did based on how many credits people with Conroes get). Wouldn't that be sweet! |

There are people crunching DC projects using Kentfields. They are nice. Indeed. I have a socket 939, so I could upgrade to a A64 x2 (dual core) and crunch maybe 2-3 times faster (depending on clock speed), but I figure that I better wait a few months for quad cores to be more affordable and crunch 9-12 times faster... I'll catch up on those few months of slower work quite quickly and have more MIPS/$ that way. Yay for Moore's Law :) |
