After extensive research into the issue, I have found the problems I have been having with my computer after running BOINC overnight are due to rosetta causing my graphics card, ATI X800Pro, to lockup. Result is a black screen and the the monitor powers down. The only way to bring the system back from the screensaver is to issue a reboot via the reset switch. What follows is an analysis of my rig by Sandra 2007. Hopefully the data will be useful in resolving this issue.

WolfDragon:
Passed this on in case they don't spot it here first. From a troubleshooting FAQ from a game: Have you tried a newer video driver? Have you tried an older video driver? Have you run a video ram test? (Can someone suggest a trusted video card testing software that can be downloaded?)

Yes, testing for those have been done, all avaialble versions of ATI catalyst, as well as some other non official ATI drivers show the same problem.

I have tested the card with several benchmarking programs, most notably the 3dmark06 and 07 suites, I believe they test video ram but am not sure. System as is, is overclocked but survived a week long torture test with 0 errors, so I am assuming that it is stable.

This issue does not occur with any games as far as I can tell. I have looped the time trial benchmarks for Doom3 and HL2 with no errors.

Perhaps this issue could be along the same lines that caused the Einstein@home group to develop the beta screensaver to fix similar issues I had with a previous machine?

- You should still test it none overclocked though.
- Does it happen on full colour mode (I see your only using 16bit, not 24/32bit) ?
- Have you updated the ULI/ALI motherboard drivers ? (AGP in particular)

- ATI have been known to have problems with boinc screen savers in general, you're not alone.

- Have you tried the latest in devleopment release of boinc (I believe they alter some screensaver code). [note to others you're using 5.4.11 under WindowsXP-SP2] http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php?min_version=5.0&dev=1

- I think this is the error code you're getting when this happens
<i><core_client_version>5.4.11</core_client_version>

What's you BOINC setup ? How did you install.
Do you need to use the screensaver ?
Couldn't you just run BOINC with the graphics disabled (in standard service mode) since you are probably asleep when it is running anyway.

not sure why it was set to 16 bit mode, reset to 32
system was tested prior to overclock for baseline values and initial stability testing
BIONC is in standard install mode and if possible I would rather not lose the screensaver

Am allowing the rosetta project run to see if it breaks again at 32 bit
