A little more activity there, I see :)

Any PHP and Mysql experts out there? The previous volunteer who worked on the fora code has stepped down because of a busy school schedule. See Dr. Andersons post below to Boinc Dev mail list.

I agree that this problem needs to be addressed, and soon.

BTW: Janus Kristensen recently stepped down as "owner"
of BOINC's PHP code (too busy).
Does anyone else want this role?
You'd need to be proficient in PHP and MySQL,
understand BOINC's many subtleties,
and understand the current PHP code.

If so: tell me (at a detailed level, including DB changes if needed)
how you'd solve the problem of disappearing team owners.

Note: the problem under discussion is about team founders abandoniing their posts and members being left leaderless.

I fail to see why this is any kind of problem that needs this sort of knee-jerk response.

The team founder is just the first guy who decided to start a team name on a particular project.

Who cares who it was?

I think it's more they need someone to do more coding than that ;-)

But to answer the question, the team looses the ability to manage the team, they cannot get the email adresses, remove people, change its name and all the other functions.
It could also mess the stats up on stats sites.

I don't think it's a very urgent problem though and has little to do with the forum code.

I don't get it.

Someone makes a team.

People join.

People leave.

All on their own!

What's to manage?

Teams that wish to kick people off,
Teams that wish to change the name of the team or any of the other information, such as a change of website, picture/logo, adjust the introduction,
Teams that wish to remove inactive users (never got that idea myself),
Teams that wish to grab all the email address and mass mail the memebers ;-)

I think mainly my second point.

I think Dr. Anderson was just asking an interview question. It may not be BOINC's most pressing problem, but it is one that would be pretty knotty to solve and you need to know how Boinc works in order to be able to propose any kind of reasonable solution.

Back when I was hiring new engineers I had a few questions like that to really see what the applicants were made of. e.g. "Take this whiteboard pen and design me a divide-by-three counter using logic elements available in 74xxx-series TTL chips."

You could learn more about an engineer by watching them work on it than you could by reading 100 pages of CV.

Actually Dr. A's question was in the dev or alpha list (forget which) and it was somthing that was brought up in there, I think by a KWSN team member and some other talk... But it was in direct response to that problem that was brought up, it also wasn't aimed at the public in general, else you would have thought they would advertise it better <rolleyes>, like post on the BOINC front page...

The search for someone to take charge of the php code is over

David Anderson to BOINC
More options 5:53 pm (3 hours ago)

Rytis Slatkevicius is now the owner of the web-site features of BOINC.
Rytis has been a very active contributor to BOINC for some time now.
Thanks to others who volunteered for this job -
your ideas and coding contributions are still very welcome!
