Maybe it is time for a new news letter to former members. Certainly could be a good idea - the last newsletter is what brought me back, and I've had 6 machines on the project (mostly 24x7, or as close as I can keep to that) ever since. I had originally left the project due to instability - the newsletter promised that the project had become more stable, and from my point of view, it certainly has - I've had no problems at all. And the stats are now (apparently) fairer, too. So newsletters certainly can work. Alver Valley Software Ltd - Contributing ALL our spare computing power to BOINC, 24x365. |

Maybe it is time for a new news letter to former members. I had the same idea and are willing to help drafting it again. I just created a draft here: http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/2nd_newsletter Anybody can edit it and fill it up. It would be nice to get some input from David Baker what are the plans in the coming months especially regarding the HIV research and the BOINC interaction with it. Keith Laidig, who sent the first newsletter out, warned me though that he might not do it again since it created a lot of trouble ISPs and global spam databases etc., but he said they can in either case just publish it on the homepage. |

Discussion of the next Rosetta Newsletter cropped up here. This thread will help to organize the conversation specifically about a new newsletter in to one area. Here is a copy of the last newsletter that was sent. It was EMailed to all registered participants to help rally support for Rosetta during CASP, and to be sure people were aware that the majority of the software problems people had run in to, which may have pushed them away from supporting Rosetta, had been resolved. Tralala I just created a draft here: So here are the questions to consider and discuss here: What should the content of the newsletter be? What are the major topics that should be discussed? Who should the newsletter be sent to? (everyone? Only active? Only inactive?) When should it be sent? (in the case of the prior newsletter, timing before CASP was important) Then to help draft the content in the Wiki. Discussion of the next Rosetta Newsletter cropped up here. This thread will help to organize the conversation specifically about a new newsletter in to one area. Content - A hello and thankyou. - What science has been done since the last newsletter (advancements to the client, CASP, outcomes of them etc.. nothing too in details just an overview with link to more detail if possible) - What's planned in the comming months, say up to the new year (thinking around a christmas newsletter time ;-)) - New credit system change overview - A welcome to the new moderators of the forum (may get more people to nosey in here and they need a welcome as well :-) - <message of recommedation to use newest boinc if there has been a new one since last newsletter, e.g. 5.4.11 (.9) or 5.6.x if it is released by then> - another thankyou and for help during CASP There was somehting else, but the little one distracted me and I've forgotten it :-S Who to send it to, well everyone that has signed up to recieve the newsletter in their preferences. <Also put a link to the profile to opt-out of future newsletters, as is needed by at least EU law I think, but for curtesy anyway https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/prefs_edit.php?subset=project > Team mauisun.org |

Discussion of new credit system should point out that Linux systems are now rewarded by work produced rather then BOINC benchmarks, and that we're seeing Linux boxes getting a nice bump under the new system. Would be nice to summarize what the Gates foundation award means to the project and what work will be done down the road with relation to that AIDS grant. Okay I've incorporated your ideas and expanded the draft. I'm not sure about: a) announcing new mods b) asking to upgrade BOINC client Both seems to me not crucial information and as usual we need to keep the letter short. Any suggestion how to order the different paragraphs? http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/2nd_newsletter |

I don't consider having new mods to be newsworthy. As for the BOINC upgrade, it might be worth a brief mention with a link to get it, or perhaps we should create a QA item that summarizes how to check your BOINC version and links to the download of the current and the install steps (including a backup of the data). Then we could just link to that specific QA item. Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. It would be nice to explain more about new approaches to the science. The little blurbs we get here and there on the boards don't really seem to help me to understand. Need something more in laymen's terms. I would be nice to hear a CASP recap. Telling how they approached a given protein and how they determined which methods to apply to solving it, and building the WUs that went out to Rosetta. Okay I've incorporated your ideas and expanded the draft. I do think the new moderators is news, It may bring people put off over the whole messy period between Mod9 not being around and the new mods. It mentions there is a forum and it may bring more people in here. It' only a short one liner or paragraph Something like I would like to welcome the new moderators to the message boards, you'll see them as MOD.xx, MOD.xx ... Please come and say hi or ask any questions at the [urltoboard]message boards. Short and simple :-) As for the boinc versioning, it maybe the only way some people get to know about it. So something short like BOINC current versions, Windows 5.4.11, Linux 5.4.9 and MacOS 5.4.9, please update if needed and find out more [link-to-boinc-download] Team mauisun.org |

Is there any news on the ciricumlum for Seattle schools to include? Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. But running Rosetta@home just might! https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ |
