I just saw this post in another thread:

https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=2139#23371

Can someone here explain to me why a discussion about this project is taking place on a board, which the common user don't know the existence of with the participation of the project leader?

I would think that the proper boards for discussions regarding this project should take place on this board, the official board for the Rosetta project, and on the Ralph board, the official board for testings for Rosetta.

And I haven't been aware of the changes as I have been busy elsewhere, so I arrived to this riot. The Ralph boards have been down untill the past few hours, so I haven't been able to go there and see what the changes are about and how it was discussed over there. And now it seems that there are discussions with David Baker as participant on some other teamboard?

What is going on here?

EDIT: I find this post specially offensive: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1662584&postcount=27

"I really don't know what to do to make everybody happy. Shall we just stick with the old credit system?

I'm delighted that there are people willing to be forum moderators. Send me an email and we will sign you up. I think a lot of the problems would not have happened if Moderator9 hadn't gotten busy, and no other volunteers really stepped forward to take his place."

Has this been posted on other teamboards? If not, why on this teamboard?

Could anyone find it's the equal attitude to the all participants?

You and everyone here has a choice whether to be offended by something or not. Not all people would see it an inherently offensive, so you have a choice. You can either make a decision that empowers you, or one that you couldn't say you are proud of.

As a member of another big team, I really dont care what websites the rosetta staff frequents. After all, they run the project.

There is nothing offensive in my post, I ask some questions about things I am wondering about.

And I suppose it's legal to ask critical questions here.

Yes, they run the project and one should presume they then would communicate via the official channels, these boards.

And I, as a volunteer supplier of processorpower to their project, should be informed on that board I frequent, this one.

Fuzzy and I do not agree often but here is one time.

I think if he had posted similar here ( He could still have posted there) it would have cleared up a lot of rumour and stopped most of what happened.

A brief answer: some teams don't like the messageboards here and choose not to have their community here. Their choice. We can't change their minds.

Why waste time and energy on this? If you simply let it go, who could you get to be to further the project? Maybe you can inspire others to install BOINC and attach to a project that can have breakthroughs with malaria, HIV, and possibly cancer?

Something has gone majorly wrong here and the posts to other forums seem as though they are about to alienate a whole new set of people, far from preventing the fire spreading through Rosetta, the dev's now seem to be fanning the fire to the darkest deepest depths.

This is the part of a post I like best. I hope it's a hoax post, and Dr Baker never said such a thing. Roughly 90% of his active hosts fit this description

PLEASE--try to think about the science and the benefits to humanity, and ignore the taunts from the little guys--they just don't matter--and I hope all this will blow over soon. You have been making a fantastic contribution, and I would hate to see this cause any disruption to our collabortive efforts together.

I`ll start a spread sheet or database on whether it was him or not....

Castro I think you`re taking things out of context for your own pleasure. I don`t think he was talking of single comp users, I think it was a generalisation and the "They don`t matter" was refering to the taunts. I think you`re reading into it what you want to hear atm.

Maybe, just maybe, you read the whole thing wrong, and should have extended the bold font 2 or 3 words to the left. So, it's not the little guys that don't matter, but rather it is thier taunts that don't matter.

If you read it your way, it's a big insult to many contributors, which I am sure Dr Baker would NEVER do. If you read it the way I outlined, it's trying to convince a bunch of contributors not to leave just because of a flamewar.

Look at it this way : If you moved the bold font two words to the right, one could read that Dr Baker favours female participants. So please keep thing in perspective.

Maybe, I'm reading it wrong and he never mean that "the little guy isn't important". If I write it "taunts from the little guys--they just don't matter". It's hardly less insulting. Who's he calling a "little guy"? That implies that some of his users are "little guys" and that in itself is insulting to many of his users. He should consider every user as important as the next.

Any communication that can be interpreted in two dramatically different ways is a failure of a communication. This post can be read either way, and neither of them is that great.

I'm sorry to have created even more problems in efforts to calm things down!!

Everybody who crunches for rosetta is making an important contribution.

The point I was trying to make is that percieved insults on these boards should not be reasons to leave
the project. What is said back and forth does not represent the opinions of the project team, and we have no way to control it, other than enlist as many moderators as possible. People interested in moderating should contact us.

Again, I want to emphasize, the project respects and is greatful for the contribution of all contributors!

Yes thanks David. It's nice to see you.

The problem is simple. There is two groups here with a different point of view.

1. Those who want to use BOINC in the standard way and want the standard credits and standard stats (with recalculation as far in the past as possible).
2. Those who want to compete.

I think both groups are respectable in the work they do. But each group will never accept the point of view of the other gtoup. After some weeks I think it's clear.

Or some users will leave the project, or each group can have the credits/stats based on the way it wants use BOINC.

I'm afraid there is no other solution. But I would be happy if there is another one.

That's only my point of view and I'm the only one reponsible for it.

Nice but not accurate: When the group you described in number 1 came in here with their arguments it started calling everyone that did not agree with them CHEATS. For weeks this has been the commont thread of all of those in Group number one messages"those who use optimized clients are cheats , cheats and cheats.

It is also a known fact that those in Group number 1 did the same thing in another project. So your dispruptive behavior was known to us here

So why are you now acting surprised at the virulent reaction you and group one got?

So you wanted to engage in a rational dialogue? You must be kidding, How could you when your stated mindset was that the other group are cheats and from the begining you slandered and libeled the other group?

You and group number one closed all avenues of dialogue by your "Cheat Mantra". It is as simple as that.

Want to hear the sad part?
We probably have more ideas in common than the one that separate us.
But given what has happened here : I rather kiss a rabid pitbull in the lips than work with any of you . I know the level of annimosity against me is the same. In other times that would have bothered me. Now, it doesn't.

There is one group of people: those who are so inspired by what is possible that they will not let the little conversations get in their way of contributing to the project.

Right now, biology is a descriptive science. If biology could become a predictive science like chemistry, then many breakthroughs are possible and mankind would be elevated immensely. That is bigger than any excuse to not participate or any excuse to sabotage by encouraging others to not participate.
