I don't have the ability to edit, unfortunately.

Yes, you have been called cheats, and you've called other people worse.

I'm trying to prevent both sides from continuing a flame war. One side isn't going to convince the other of anything if the only points they make are derogatory comments. . . anyone's derogatory comments.

Well, hopefully you won't see much more from us at XS. This project has had all of the fun that it once had sucked right out of it.

So- let's keep score here:

David Kim's only visible post from the last 24 hours (of two) is to tell us that he's going to install more ways to block people from posting.

David Baker won't post here, but will post on the XS site about the backdating topic, and his only two other posts have likewise been hidden in the banned thread.

The only other project representative - Ethan - hid the thread that has the majority of the discussion on the whole issue.

And - you wonder why this project has MAJOR PR problems? Gee... who would have thought. All the goodwill that's been generated over the last 6 to 8 months has been flushed away. No longer is Rosetta the model BOINC project that's renowned for it's communication with members.

Good Luck
Proudly Banned from Predictator@Home and now Cosmology@home as well. Added SETI to the list today. Temporary ban only - so need to work harder :)

I beg to differ on that. I had a thread I was involved with discussing this issue yanked a few weeks ago. Both sides have been moderated.

SOoon enough one of two things will happen: Either the person would be fed up, give up the serious discussion and close the window, or stick around and get hammered.

And then came from
UBT-Halifax-Lad proving him correct...

Hee hee no apologies for a long long thread, if we were to go back to the message that started it all I guess many people would say its the 1st post but that depends on people perceptions as were all different.

By the way the ban tool WILL NOT work, if you were to say banish me for two weeks it would only enrage, I would sign up in new user, copy and paste and be 10 x more annoying.

When someone starts a thread in a reasonable civilized manner and is then the butt of trolling and derogatory remarks and the mods do squat he is bound to get angry and retaliate.

Well it looks like you will be the 1st to receive a permanent ban if you carry on the way you are doing, best thing is to just forget about everything that is going on, even take some time away from the boards and wait for the dust to settle, continually voicing your opinion in the way you are doing at the moment is only going to get you running into more trouble with users, mods & dev's.

PS: That is not a dig at you, just what I can see happening due to the circumstances

Understand me if you can. Once in this mood you can talk to me civilized and I`ll be reasonable. Bait me as you are doing and I really don`t care, I live and thrive on trouble, I enjoy it. Go look up psychopath, you may start to understand !

Someone here is talking civilised and its certainly not you all your posts to this thread so far have been cocky arrogant and threatening, not one of my post here falls under this category at all.

Not replying to you anymore as its a pointless exercise, I will just await the mods to wake up and come do there job, that's if they do anything at the weekend.

To use an analogy your like a dog with a bone, your best bet is to leaving everything well alone, as its only landing you into more and more trouble.

David Baker won't post here, but will post on the XS site about the backdating topic, and his only two other posts have likewise been hidden in the banned thread.

People can go over to the XS forums and see Dr. Bakers post if it is going to be deleted here. :-( There are a few others there by him now BTW about signing up moderators from XS to Rosetta and possibly going back to the old credit system.

Edit : Better still, here are his other posts anyway. Hope they dont get deleted.

Dr Baker Wrote :
of course I couldn't agree more!! don't let the small number of people throwing insults around cause such great damage.
to repeat--the project never stated or implied in any way that anybody except for the few people Jose pointed out had ridiculous credit claims was cheating. important science is getting done no matter which client is used, and it is all worthwhile.

the push to improve the credit system was from Jose and other XS members who did not like the fact that it was easy to trick the system into
reporting huge amount of credits when in fact no work was done. this obscures the great contribution many of you are making.

Please remember everybody, I'm a scientist trying to solve science problems, and I am relatively new to the sociology of distributed computing. I don't think it is true that the complainers are having a disproportionate influence over the project. The new credit system was proposed by many people over the past months, and I don't think anyone thinks it is not reasonable.
The problem with the offensive posts is very hard to deal with--it would require a full time moderator which we don't have (it is basically me and David Kim right now, and I don't even know how to delete stuff and believe me I have a zillion other things to do as well--trying to deal with this issue is certainly making it difficult to focus on science today). And the boinc developers are already swamped and can't make changes to address these issues either.
PLEASE--try to think about the science and the benefits to humanity, and ignore the taunts from the little guys--they just don't matter--and I hope all this will blow over soon. You have been making a fantastic contribution, and I would hate to see this cause any disruption to our collabortive efforts together.

I really don't know what to do to make everybody happy. Shall we just stick with the old credit system?

I'm delighted that there are people willing to be forum moderators. Send me an email and we will sign you up. I think a lot of the problems would not have happened if Moderator9 hadn't gotten busy, and no other volunteers really stepped forward to take his place.

...
The only thing I can say, is that the policy of the moderators at BBC/CE is very clear and I think is different than here. If you would please allow me to provide some constructive cretisim (sp):

users respond to the offending post because they have no other course of action they know of. So let us say there is a clear stated policy (say a sticky) that states that:
....

I'm a moderator at BBC/CCE and also CPDN, and it's a very hard job! :-)

For every post that gets deleted, there can be 10 or 20 posts in the moderators area discussing it, and the discussion and analysis usually goes on far longer than the original argument in the forums. We have a thread which is 700 posts long about users we have deleted (usually spammers on the PHP forum).

The PHP forum is far easier to moderate than the boinc forums, simply because there are more tools at hand (thread locking, editing, private messages, banning of IP ranges, ...). The single most useful tool is private messages - the benefits of being able to have a quiet word with somebody without involving everybody else are enormous.

The moderators here have none of these tools, and at a time like this it's an incredibly difficult job. So + to every moderator who reads this, as thanks for your hard work.

More bait...by UBT

The dog with a bone analogy has been used many times in reference to me, so possibly true. You`re the one who want`s to play with my bone. Me ...I`m just saying if you want to play, bring it. Cocky ? Arrogant ? Yep, you picked the game now you don`t want to play. Or don`t bait the dog it`s not leashed !

Where`s trouble ? I see none ! Don`t threaten useless things it serves no purpose.

I am completely fed up with irks like you. Beyond care !

The mods can hide individual posts, but most seem to take the easy way out and just hide the whole thread.

I wish it was that easy. The problem is we don't have the ability to edit messages. So if person A says something offensive, and persons B through F quote that post in theirs, then deleting post A has no effect since it's posted in four other places.

Maybe you should check onto a phpBB2 board. The admins and mods have a lot of power and options.

Maybe after a while Rosetta can move to a more user freindly and managable board. ClimatePrediction/BBC being one of the larger projects to do that.
They do keep the boinc forum for the purists though ;-)

I know it's not as integrated into boinc as this forum but it doesn't mean it cannot be. They all just read from a database.

But that something to look at in the future.

Also you've tested out other forum sections at Ralph, are we ever going to get it over here ?

Not all boinc based forums look boring and none descript

Jus tto add, If I had my way for the layout, the boincstats is a nice start.

PLUS I would use one forum for both Ralph and Rosetta. Since there is no need to display RAC, POINTs or have that kind of integration at Ralph. Then there is no real need to have the seperate forum. Just create another subsection here.

Have a

General Area
- Announcements
- General Chat (cafe)
- whatever else
- Team Talk

Rosetta Specific
- News
- Science
- Tech Talk (Number crunching)
- Feedback & Bugs (comments and suggestions)
- Help with rosetta

Ralph Specific
- News
- Testing
- ... etc as seen needed ...

That mean all Rosetta people see Ralph information if they want, it's all in one place and the sections are a bit more defined..
Of course that a 5 second rough scetch.

It does not mean remove Ralph's forum as you'll still need the to test out forum ideas.

If I could lock a thread and remove individual posts I would, but the only option is to delete.

by halifax-lad

Good thing would be for the new forum code to be uploaded that allows devs & mods to bar people from the message board system for upto 2 weeks in a row
which dr. kim thinks is an excellent idea.

i have to say angus, this is the first time i've agreed with you, but i have to ask.....can you still defend this type of message board as being appropriate for the size and scope that the rosetta project has become? it's painfully obvious that as it is, it's not working, either for the participants or the moderators. and i for one don't understand their reluctance to fix the problem.

this solution has been proposed a few times before mike, but i don't think has been taken seriously.

from dr. baker, by way of whl

perhaps we could convince dr. baker that a regular php board could be implemented and then have trusted volunteer moderators, thereby taking some of the workload off the project scientists.

the benefits of having that are

a. better organization of posted material
b. the ability of the mods to keep things "civilized" thru deletion of posts, private message warnings, locking of threads and banning
c. a daily posts button to cut time spent reading post to a minimum, which would save the mods time.

the cons are that

a. the message board won't look the same
b. you'd have to re-register for it. (which might be a blessing in disguise)

as large as rosetta has become, don't you think it's time to solve this problem, or do you really want things like this to flair up over and over again just so you can whine that you can't fix it for whatever excuse you can find.
