What I figured, but it doesn't look like it. at 134F now, and still going on and off.

Disable the 'enable CPU temperature control' will disable the automatic control of the fans. And should enable you to just leave it on full. OR mid, whatever you want.

I took a different tack and Googled Intel Yonah temperatures. Some of the overclocked and watercooled processors are running in your temperature range. I had thought because your CPU is 65 nanometer technology that it would run cooler. I saw a post by CompGeek at ExtremeSystems indicating that he runs Rosetta on one, http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=103638.

Don't be excited if you find that one core runs cooler than the other when not fully loaded. That is normal.

Is 60 the highest fan setting available? Mine goes to 63.

Back to the fan stopping situation: You could ask Dell support for help. Being that I have Arctic Silver 5, in my refrigerator and 600 and 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper, thermal materials remover, and thermal surface purifier in my garage, you can figure that I would reseat the heatsink. Dell uses thermal pads, but you would probably void your warranty by reseating the heatsink so ask them first and write down the person's name and identification number if told to proceed.

Another thing you can do is read and then post if necessary at http://cdiefer.proboards29.com/. There could be a problem with the fan control utility.

It appears that 70 C temperatures could be normal for your processor. There are numerous factors involved and one is the type and location of the sensor on the motherboard. Some simply don't give accurate readings. BTW you will find that overclockers and processor manufacturers use Centigrade temperatures in their discussions.

dag it looks good in 1024 x 768. I'll make sure to put urls on a separate line if that is the cause of your problem.

Edit: I believe you are referring to the image which I see only as link due to my forum preferences.

Since posting thumbnails doesn't work here as it does on other boards that use BBCode, I have begun using the direct link URLs. I use ImageShack.

Any progress on the fan interruptions? Have you tried manual control to see if the fan will run continuously?

I set the temp control to fan of 63 (all above 49C). I disabled the CPU temp control, and only clicked the "enable forcing to highest.."
Its currenty 60C and its still happening. Im not so concerned for the CPU, but the HD starts to heat up, and after an 2hrs or so, the left of the keyboard (and bottom, right.. the hard drive i think) gets quite hot.
Its only like 6weeks old, so im hoping its not any problem with the heatsink seating...
I have speed switch installed also, could it be conflicting?

I just don't get what would be telling it "oh slow down" ?

I've never run speed switch. I would remove it and see if there is a difference.

The normal way to run is to use CPU temperature control. If the fans cycle on and off with both settings (enable forcing and temp control) when the temperatue settings are set low, then exit 18kfanGUI. Keep crunching and let the processor run on the Dell settings. When the fan comes on, does it cycle? If yes, then get support from Dell http://support.dell.com If not, the problem is 18kfanGUI on your computer (although it is on the compatibility list). As the last resort to make 18fanGUI work, I would remove the program in Add or Remove programs, download it again, install, and setup again using their User Manual http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/manual30/index.html. If the problem continues, you can get better help than I can offer on their forum.

The fan runs w/o the program, but only on low.. I could never HEAR it running before I used this program, even when the programs told me the CPU was >70C

By the way another program I use on my other laptop (Pentium4-m 1.6GHz) that my brother recently gave me (Toshiba Tecra 9100) is
http://www.pbus-167.com/nhc/nhc.htm
Notebook Hardware Control

It seemed very nice, not tried the newer versions. Certainly more user friendly than RMClock. Unfortunatly cannot try it out on there just yet as I've had to lend the the powersupply to my dad.

One other thing. I couldn't tell when looking at the pictures at www.dell.com: Does that computer have two CPU fans mounted vertically in the case or does it have a single fan mounted horizonatally in the bottom? If it has two fans and one of them is not working, you could have these symptoms. My Dell Inspiron 8100 has a fan assembly with two fans, and replacing the assembly requires removal of the motherboard from the case.

Running only one fan is consistent with 60 C temperatures.

Normally it was running silent. The "stopping" is reverting the normal dell maximum (unless it hits 80C maybe?)

Theres an intake on the bottom, and an out on the side... Im point a flashlight through the grill but I can't see anything.

The layout is similar to the ABS Mayhem G3 on a Uniwill mobo. The heat under the palm rest is from the hard drive, and the ABS laptops have the same heat problem.

Can you determine if the fan runs both slow and fast speeds?

The screenshot you posted is not like the one shown at
http://cdiefer.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=i8kfan&action=display&thread=1153060168 for an Inspiron 9400 with one fan. Maybe you need to deselect the second fan.

That's what ticking the 'enable hardware sensor support' does, it changes the highlow to numbers.
0=off
30=low
60=high

You chould be able to get inbetween speeds, though my aging laptop just has the 3 (well as far as I can remember)
Well this thread did something, I didn't notice he'd updated it till this thread started :-)
