Should'nt that be application if we want some real optimization here? Dunno about you, but that really confuses me ? Dunno how all of that can be done with the client ? Sorry, correct. I meant the "client application". Not the "BOINC client". ... i.e. I was referring to the part Dr. Baker's team is developing and improving, not BOINC. vester Hopefully, we can post questions about the new system in David Kim's topic. I have several already. :-) I think "questions" are ALWAYS welcome, (although why not wait until you've had a chance to read the description David Kim is going to release tomorrow?) and that what Dr. Baker was trying to head off was all of the suggestions (demands) for things to be this way and that, when the current plan hasn't even been fully described yet. To a large extent, the "new credit system" is a non-event, because they aren't switching to it now. They're just presenting more data then they used to. And many rushed to assumptions and conclusions about long-term implications prematurely. Let's give it the 2 weeks, examine the new data available, review the description coming tomorrow, and understand the new data and see how things look with a week or two of data to give perspective. ...then offer constructive comments, suggestions, ideas for further improvements on flaws or loopholes the new approach may have. Sounds like there will be plenty of time for comment before any eventual switchover. I'm waiting. I should have said I have questions in mind that I hope he answers in his post. I'm not anticipating a fuss. Of course, I am curious about the definition of "time" and I hope that Linux distros work well on it. I visited USALug this morning and it appears that some Linux users will be interested in performance on their computers. Edit: I just read a story at http://bink.nu that over 97% of computers worldwide now run Windows. I still don't want to exclude anyone. |

...I am curious about the definition of "time"... The new system won't use time anymore, that's the beauty. Doesn't matter how long it takes to pick a bushel of apples, you are paid for one bushel. They refer to credits per hour, because different computers have such a vast difference in capability. Since the credit is really for the amount of computational work done, not hours of time contributed, they make reference to credits per hour simply as a frame of reference. A 1Ghz PC won't earn as much credit per hour as a 3Ghz, because it can't perform as much computational work in an hour. And that's true with the existing system as well. The only time measurement sounds like it would be used in determining the credit value per model crunched. I presume that would just be based upon the "CPU time" column shown in BOINC to compute the credit per model value... but the time report of any given machine does not effect the credit granted. The next question is what about queue shaping? Some work units will run more quickly than others and some members will dump longer running work units to get the shorter ones. Edit: David Kim just answered that question https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=2164 by describing "credits/model value". |

I have a question as well, I agree that the credit system is better but the competion between the teams is corrupted now. Isn't it better to start all over with the new system, like a rosetta 2 project. That makes the competition much greater. A gap from 4 million point takes way to long to close now |
