There I was, lounging about this morning pondering the universe, when I think I might have had an epiphany! I think it would be great to have a Rosetta@home desktop background image in all of the standard image configurations (800 x 600, 1024 x 768, etc). You could link to these right on the Rosetta home page separately, then tell visitors how to get them on their desktop: it's pretty simple. And many of the ideas on the Rosetta banner thread could easily fit into this with little or no effort.

But I think there might be another great idea as well. What about the idea of having a separate Rosetta@home screensaver as a standalone. By this I mean something that could go well beyond the current screensaver that tells about the progress of the calculations being conducted.

What about something that could be graphically funny or serious that tells about Rosetta in a different sort of way. For example, someone could make a screensaver that depicts the idea of parachuting onto another planet looking for the lowest point on that planet and then reporting the results. There are plenty of other analogies that have been bandied about on these boards that could be incorporated into this that someone with graphical aspirations could make into a standalone screensaver. This sort of idea can really take off with some creative types who frequent these boards, and desktop images and standalone screensavers are usually pretty simple to create from what I undererstand.

Coolness has invaded us again!!

I was reading my original post when I realized that I may not have been clear. I think what I meant was that a desktop wallpaper image for a PC or Mac would be a great thing to have. I know I would love to download a new Rosetta@home wallpaper in 800 X 600 or 1024 X 768 pixel setting. Hope this helps.

Yes, I got it. In fact was thinking animated screen savers might actually be fun too!

If I hear you right, you're suggesting that backgrounds be created which would help promote Rosetta. So, even if you can't run Rosetta at work, you can cover your desktop with it, so your co-workers ask you about it, and they all go home and join up.

Might I suggest we use this thread for people to post background images or ideas for what they might look like? Perhaps the ideas inspire someone else to scratch out a creative and intriguing background.

Let's start with thumbnails and work our way up. I mean let's get a bunch of ideas flowing here, then use the rating (+ button) to vote for which people like best, and then have someone create full sized images of the top three in 2 or 3 different screen sizes.

Exactly. I have to admit I didn't think of the work angle the way you did, but I think it is a great idea too. I was thinking much more along the lines of current crunchers. :( I hope Soriak, Hoelder1in, mnb-fin and others who posted to the banner thread take a gander at this one as well. By the way, did you know that the boinc website now has a logos and graphics link on their home page? It's pretty cool, really. I hope we get lots of that sort of thing here as well. That's the way Rosetta should do this project as a model.
