Ok - so I'll just write the program to reply whenever River posts. That way, if River doesn't want the thread to be shut down with me in the lead, then all he needs to do is not post here ;)

I'm just taking my chances in this thread...Hoping I won't be trapped in here forever if it shuts down.

I've got three machines...It would be nice if I had one that could do all that.

Uh... No. It was shut down for thanksgiving.

BTW, do you celebrate something along the lines of thanksgoing at this time of year in the UK?

There is Guy Fawkes night, 5th November when we celebrate an early victory in the way against terrorism. 5th November 1605 many kegs of gunpowder were found ready to go bang in the cellars under the Houses of Parliament, ready to be set off during the annual opening ceremonies and finish off the King and many members of both Houses.

Many Catholics still refuse to celebrate it, as it was a Catholic plot and many contemprary Catholics saw Guy Fawkes as a martyr not a terrorist (does this sound familiar today?).

Modern mainstream British view is that they has a fair grievance against the portestant King, but took their means of dissent too far.

Effigies of Guy Fawkes are burnt on communal bonfires, and fireworks abound. Say "fireworks night" to a Brit and we think Nov 5th.

Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason, and plot.

I am told that colonial Americans celebrated Guy Fawkes night, being protestants and loyal to the Crown as most of them were at first. Later, after the US Revolutionary War, your ancestors dedided not to continue celebrating the survival of a Brit king - hence the US practice of celebrating Halloween a few nights before.

Ironically that put US protestants in line with British Catholics, who were already celebrating Halloween... ain't history odd?

Wikipedia on Guy Fawkes

There is also the first Sunday in Advent, coming up soon, but this is only celebrated by some branches of the Christian church, and not by the irreligious majority.

that was interesting to read, though my brain is a bit fried after spending 8 hrs sorting out a tiny trickle of the email backlog for technical support, so i am not able to digest the contents of the last post very well. plasma tv questions can be a little tricky to wrap your mind around.
