When my computer tries to fetch new work I keep getting the following messages
1) 'Couldn't resolve host name. [boinc.bakerlab.org}
2) 'Master file fetch fail'
3) 'Too many backoffs - fetching master file'

Any ideas?

"couldn't resolve host name" sounds like a DNS problem. The system can't communicate with the DNS server, because of a new software firewall, the system isn't connected to the internet, or the DNS server is down.

Software firewalls like Mcafee, Norton/Symantec, and others will pop up questions asking permission to allow apps to see the internet. Each time the app gets upgraded, they'll ask for permission again. If you have a software firewall - even if it's part of an antivirus package (like Norton Internet Security) - mention the firewall and version, and we can help identify what needs to be done to give Rosetta and Boinc permission to access the internet again.

If you click Start, then Click Run and type "CMD" and hit enter.. then type "ping boinc.bakerlab.org" and resolves boinc.bakerlab.org into a number and pings it 3 times, then your DNS server is working fine. If it doesn't work, and "ping 140.142.20.103" gives you messages like "reply from 140.142.20.103: bytes 32 time 102ms ttl=53" then your ISP's DNS server is acting up.

Give us a bit more information, and we should be able to get you back up and running. (The normal advice for DNS problems is usually to reboot your system, and then start troubleshooting..)

The "couldn't resolve host name" doesn't fit to the problem I had - but if the ping works fine and the problem persists, you could try this one :

Master file fetch / http error - a possible workaround

It will sure work only in certain situations when client and server get out of sync with their requests/replies.
