It has been discussed before and the official answer from Dr. Baker is

NO

Well... actually, I think it would be more correct to say that the offical word was that they are already constantly optimizing the code... the only Rosetta client will be that produced by the Baker lab.

Greg, welcome to Rosetta! The topic has been discussed in several threads already. It's not that anyone questions the merits of optimization, or the potential to get more work done with the existing CPU time... it's just that the code is not public domain, and it is contstantly being enhanced and improved to try different approaches and techniques to solving protein structure.

Sorry, I guess I meant "no unofficial optimized apps"

Well that is fine ...BUT...The REAL question is are they ever going to release a specific platform optimized application for like sse(2)(3)(4),3dnow,etc... Einstein now has a switch that asks sse yes or no of the processor at the server side and the app optimizes accordingly.... It has more to do with this issue being rewarded for having a faster computer than it is to have unofficial or official opty apps :) This IS the question I would like to see addressed by the Devs.

It would be awesome to get apps that are specifically optimized for

Xeon
P4
P3

64Bit

Not hard to do and We could all crunch more Rosetta!

We've discussed this before, and it's not so trivial to make changes to the project, mostly because the code is fairly complex, and not at all as simple to optimize as for example SETI.

I have looked with Oprofile on the code being executed in Rosetta, and it's mostly held up by floating point performance. Since I work for the other processor manufacturer, I'm not up to speed on how much better (or worse) the performance of floating point is on x87 compared to SSE, but just simply adding "make floats SSE" will not give much performance improvement on my AMD processor, unless you also USE the SSE in a parallel effort - and that's depending on having the data organized in the right way, or it's much harder to achieve something... See the posts on "64-bit Rosetta" in this forum, about 15-20 subjects down from the sticky ones...

Information.
From a post on the board of ClimatePrediction, I found this link to a remarkable post on a blog.

BOINC Application Optimization: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

It's worth for you to read the detailed explanation of the optimisation.
