Hello. I'm running Rosetta now on a Linux system (Ubuntu, btw) and the "show graphics" option is greyed out. I can't get the graphics. Does anyone know about this? Is there a way to get the graphics? Cheers, Daniel. |

AFAIK, the graphics-display is "Windows only". -- Mats |

AFAIK, the graphics-display is "Windows only". I know that the "screen saver" is, but with other BOINC projects I can get a window that shows the graphics. I hope that the graphics window is not Windows only. That would really suck. So much so that I'd quit Rosetta and contribute to another BOINC project that is more interested in supporting Linux. First of all, welcome to Rosetta! Well, I know it's not a Windows-only thing, because it worked when I was crunching on my Mac. But my Linux (Fedora) box has the button grayed out, as well. I'm sure it's something they're working on (though we'll probably have to wait until after the CASP competition). Maybe (and this is just guessing, on my part) the reason they're waiting until last with Linux is that a lot of Linux boxes are running without monitors? I know mine is, and I'm sure a lot of others are, as well. Unfortunately, one thing about a relatively young project is that it has a lot of different stuff to work on, and there are only 24 hours in a day. Graphics, for better or for worse, are fairly low on the priority list. Still, the contribution a Linux computer makes to the science is just as valid as that of a Windows machine. I'm guessing that, in a couple of months, we might see graphics on Linux. "There are obviously many things which we do not understand, and may never be able to." Hi! Thanks for the welcome :-D It's good to feel welcome. Hmmm... I guess I could wait for a while to see if a Linux version with graphics is in the works. Cheers, Daniel. |

Rosetta has currently no graphics for the Linux client. :-/ I had asked for it some month ago, but no answer. :- https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=1071 LUE |

A Linux graphics version is in the works. We finally got some more manpower on our development team. Look for it on ralph in the next month! We're still checking whether the memory requirements might be too high (we seem to have a lot of outstanding users who crunch with Linux boxes with <256Mb Ram). Rosetta has currently no graphics for the Linux client. :-/ |

But you are not going to make the graphics mandatroy, so what's the problem? Anyone who thinks they're slow can turn them off. In fact, I wouldn't have them on 24/7 (that'd spend CPU cycles I'd rather spend getting credits) but I'd turn them on when I want. Btw, 256MB of RAM is not bad. My laptop has 384MB and it's fine for most things you'd want to do (using GIMP is painful though, so I use my desktop for that). If you think about it, that's how big hard drives used to be. If people run an entire OS on 4MB of RAM, why do you suddenly need 512MB for Rosetta? |

A Linux graphics version is in the works. We finally got some more manpower on our development team. Look for it on ralph in the next month! The nature of the work is memory intensive. This is true of almost all of the BOINC science applications. In the case of Rosetta, they have just reduced the memory requirements to 256 from the original 512. This is a significant improvement, but it also means that it is a more serious limitation. The graphics display is not the source of this issue, but it does exacerbate the problem. While it is possible to run any of the BOINC science applications with less than the recommended memory, you are likely to have more problems than systems that meet or exceed the requirements. Even systems that minimally meet the requirements often have more issues than those that exceed them. Not the least of these issues is increased paging and consequently more wear on the disk drives. It's been over a year and a half. I wanted to see those proteins. How else can I convince people that come over about BOINC and want to see AIDS research in action? I'm leaving the project. |
