Chalk (The word "calculus" means "little chalk stone" and refers to the stones the Pythagoreans used to do their math with. One limitation of that kind of computations was the Pythagorean theorem, in which a^2 + b^2 = c^2. With a and b = 1 this meant calculating the square root of 2, which is an irrational number and would need an infinite number of "calculi" for a correct representation. Of course they never could do that. This means that our term "calculus", describing math with infinites and infinitesimals like limits, integrals or differentials, carries a name that is pretty paradox.) |
