The "watchdog" is a feature of Rosetta. The way the science works, they sometimes find specific protein structures that throw off the search and they end up repeating work they've already done. The watchdog keeps an eye on things and detects when it thinks this might be occuring and can step in and end the work unit. The project can then compare the results from others working on the same protein and see if it is a problem with this specific protein, or a bug in the program that can be corrected.

You should probably post a brief note in the "problems with v5.22" thread, since the WU was crunched under v5.22. Just as you did here with WU name, the link, and mention that the watchdog ended the WU. It's entirely possible others will see the same outcome.

Ah ha! I didn't know they added this message. I doesn't mean the watchdog ended your work unit... it just means that as part of completing the work unit, the watchdog for it is ending as well. This was posted here. Sorry, my previous post was talking about stuff that does not relate to what happend to your work unit.

...so there nothing abnormal about it. A negative energy level is actually a good thing. This is part of what it was reporting back to the project. It means your computer found a model for the protein that may actually hold together and therefore could be the correct structure prediction for the protein.

low Energy = -218

sorry for asking in german, here is my question in english:

How did you get this information about low energy = -218? I don't see this in your result page.

He probably got it from the graphic display during processing.

While this subject is not really topical to this thread, the above is not quite accurate.

The watchdog is designed to check the progress made during the processing of a work unit. If some event occurs that pauses the work (preemption by another project, users pausing a work unit, BOINC shutting down, etc) when the work unit restarts, the watch dog will check the progress made on the work unit against the progress made at the last checkpoint, If no progress has been made, and that condition repeats 4 times in a row, the work unit will be terminated.

This was added to prevent work units from entering into endless loops and never completing for days at a time.
