I'm new to this project, would you call it a project? I'm starting off running my useless 500mhz laptop almost 247 since it just collects dust. Hope it helps out in many ways and i might even use some of my older ones since i resell them on ebay if it looks like it helps :)

I use everything I can find brother ... every little bit helps, and can be fun too. I resurrected a 486/66 and ran it until it died (2 weeks 24/7)!!

I just reattached and I think I'll settle in for awhile. It's nice and peaceful over here and the project is well administered.

I am also a newbie to all this and thought I'd do it just to be helpful. What are the credits all about?

They're just a way to measure how much work you've done for the project. They don't tie to any rewards, and unless you're interested in competing against other volunteers or teams, you don't need to keep track of them.

I've added a what are credits section to a Q&A if you'd like more details.
