This is a more complete version of the story. It also has a photo.

The story is supposed to reach a wider audience (not just Washington) soon.

Berach: Be sure your old computer meets the suggested requirements. But I see you've got credits already, so it must be working. And I see you are running Win98. I seem to recall there are some problems with Win98 where it crunches ok, but doesn't properly record the crunch time or there are issues getting the credits for the work or something. So, don't be surprised if you see something odd like that on your PC. Windows 2000, XP or 2003 server are the Windows releases that are formally supported... but others do work for many too.

Depending on your frame of mind, Win98 may be a perfectly acceptable platform. I ran several machines with Win98 and 512K memory as dedicated Rosetta crunchers, and they all worked just fine. The only thing that they will sometimes get wrong is the claim for credit: as noted elsewhere they have a nasty habit of doing the work correctly, but then claiming zero credit for it.

Personally I couldn't give a **** if that happens, since all I care about is the science, and the numbers returned are just fine. However many people here seem to care at least as much about the credit, and so a machine that doesn't get any, even though it's doing useful work, is regarded as highly suspect.

You'd need to make a call as to how much this bothers you, and react as appropriate, needless to say it's a decision that none of us can make for you.

Anyway, welcome aboard, and have fun crunching.

The national version of my story went out today, so it should be in papers and on Web sites around the nation tomorrow morning.

Donna:

FYI. I read your article in this morning's San Francisco Chronicle and joined the program. Thanks for a well written and useful article. I hope that your article triggers a major expansion in participants for Rosetta@Home.
