Seams starting early today Rosetta started causeing a windows error believe it was 386. It freezes the program and only way to get screen saver to drop is Ctr/Alt/delete. Is this caused by error in thew Wu. Or a bad call to windows?

The "WU hang" is basically a case where the BOINC Manager is still responsive and shows the running WU, and you can see the CPU time rolling up, but it just keeps running... sometimes for days (at least I THINK that's what it does, I've never had one... knock wood!)

So, no, what you describe doesn't sound like a WU problem.

When you say if freezes... are you using the screen saver? And so you basically aren't able to get back to the Windows desktop? Or, do you mean that the BOINC Manager won't open? Do you have any other applications running? Are they responsive as normal? Are you able to bring up the Windows task manager? If so, click the CPU % column twice to sort it descending, and see if Rosetta tasks are still running, or if system idle is using the CPU.

Charlie, go to "control panel" "screensaver", this should prompt your firewall to ask if Boinc.scr can have permission to the internet. grant it access.

Its the screen saver locking up. I checked the firewall and Boinc.scr does have premission
the last Crash window pop up came up and had a error/bug report saying

Rosetta-5.06-windows intelx86.exe had a problem

is it working now, or have you seen the screensaver working recently?
so, while the screensaver is running, an unhandled exception or instruction occurs and that causes the freeze?
Is it when the screensaver starts or thereafter?

OK I'm confused, the only computer you have attached is a P4 3.2 using WinXP. I don't even see a win98 machine. Perhaps you meant winxp pro sp2?

try turning OFF the boinc screensaver and running a while (complete 3-4 results), then switch back. You can still see the rosetta graphic even without the screensaver. you select the running unit on the work/tasks tab, then pick "show graphics".

I know Dr. Anderson and Rom are working on fixes for the screensaver. That's why I asked so many questions. I just reported a screen freeze myself last nite, and Rom's asking me questions trying to nail it down. I saw your initial post and it looked identical to my issue. I pointed Rom at this thread, but it looks like yours is a different issue.

Humm didnt knwo they were looking at the screen savers haveing issues. I wouldnt be surprised if they are not the same basic problem. I understood why you were asking questions. Only way to get information is to ask the need questions. Thanks for pointing them to this post also

I was wondering if you use an ATI GPU? Since my screensaver occasionally hangs as well. Then after a few seconds ATI recovers the GPU and all is well again. This problem is happening not as often with 5.06+ but I had endless problems with older versions.

to tell you the truth i am not sure what settings it uses. I am not fully versed in the software. I just used the default settings. Funny thing is it was not happening before 3 days ago.
