Hello;
I have an M1 Apple Silicon iMac, and I haven't been able to get any work - even after suspending/removing other projects. I get a notice saying "Virtual Box isn't installed" I've tried to install it but it isn't compatible with my Mac, anyway this can get fixed?

Only if VirtualBox is developed to support M! silicon.
Since it's been developed specifically for x86 host hardware (it requires SSE2 support), i don't see it happening.

You would need to use Virtualisation software that runs on M1 silicon (such as UTM), and setup a x86 Virtual Machine with a supported OS and then setup BOINC on that VM, in order to run Virtualbox & it's VM on that VM.
I personally wouldn't bother.

Grant;
thank you for your response, I hope in the future with increased adaptation of apple silicon, it will be written for. Until then I guess I'll unfortunately have to remove the project.
Thank you for your response.

I have an M1 Mac, and I am pulling in work units and processing them. Here's a sample from the log:

Fri Feb 18 07:24:56 2022 | Rosetta@home | Reporting 1 completed tasks
Fri Feb 18 07:24:56 2022 | Rosetta@home | Requesting new tasks for Apple M1

Fri Feb 18 09:43:10 2022 | Rosetta@home | Started download of movingstub_gzm1_minimize_3CL_AVLstub_0134_59_extract_B.zip

I'm also seeing this:

Fri Feb 18 09:51:38 2022 | Rosetta@home | Message from server: VirtualBox is not installed

which I assume means that there are tasks that require VB, and tasks that do not.

As far as VirtualBox goes: it's a hypervisor for x86 virtualization. It will only ever run on x86.

I don't see that ever happening.
As nikwax pointed out there are Tasks that can be processed by Apple silicon, but they are extremely rare now. All the work being developed at present requires VirtualBox and even on the hardware it does run on, it is problematic at best with massive disk & memory requirements.
Given that they aren't developing their applications for what is the largest base of hardware & OS, the odds of them doing so for what is barely a fraction of the desktop/server market i would consider to be 0.

I get the same message that Virtualbox isn't installed, but maybe I get tasks - sometimes I leave my computer on and leave while BOINC is running in the background, they could be then. I'll check my user average.
Thanks for sharing!

Running an Intel iMac with macOS Big Sur 11.6 and when BOINC manager( version 7.16.19 ) launches and connects to Rosetta@home its sends a "Virtual Box not installed" message to the BOINC Event log. I don't have Virtual Box installed. Does Rosetta@home now require a VM like Virtual Box? I have checked the BoincManager binary ( with the unix file command ) and it is universal with both an x86_64 and arm64.

Any ideas what this message is telling me?

Thank you.

Best, Brian Stevens

You need VirtualBox to run Python Tasks which are the only Tasks now generally available from Rosetta.
There are some Rosetta 4.20 Tasks every now & then. But not often, and they're not available for long when they are.

I too have been getting the dreaded virtual box not installed error. I'm running a 2019 Intel iMac Monterey OS 12.3 and Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB. Selecting the project and then hitting update sometimes gives me new tasks, but lately all of them have been terminating with a Computational Error message. Any chance there is going to be a software update to fix this or is this an OS or hardware related issue?

A whole batch of faulty Tasks were released (over 1 million).
It looks like the project is just going to wait for them to all error out.

I guess i have been lucking out and getting tasks to process. Sounds like it's not going to last. I guess I'll go looking for a project that supports Apple silicon.
