BOINC Manager 5.2.13 under Windows XP Pro, set up to start with boot-up. After boot-up, the circle-B icon is found in the tray, but a 'visible' button is also found on the taskbar. The taskbar button has all options on right-click except Restore. Selecting Close has no effect. Selecting Maximize restores a full-screen window with NO DATA on any tab. This window CAN be Restored to normal size, but cannot be closed, only Minimized to the taskbar.

Surprisingly, after much trial and error, I found that if the circle-B in the TRAY is double-clicked, the Restore-sized BOINC Manager window appears, with all tab data present. This window appears to BE the phantom window, since there is no additional button on the taskbar. AFTER performing this non-intuitive procedure, the window CAN be closed as expected, making the taskbar button disappear, while leaving the circle-B icon in the tray. Everything is now normal until I reboot again.

If this is unavoidable Windows behavior, it might be a good idea to note this in the instructions so the users don't try wierd things like playing with the MSCONFIG to try to get rid of it.

No it's not normal behavior, that's why you saw no mention of such in the instructions. Have you got BOINC running as a service? Or as a single user installation?

Do you perhaps have BOINC in your startup folder? And have it fired off by some other means as well?

I have it running as a single user installation. The BOINC manager program is in my startup folder ("C:Program FilesBOINCboincmgr.exe" /s), but I don't remember if it was put in automatically by the install program, or if I put it there myself. If you recommend taking it out, I will do so.

BTW I didn't notice the typo of "EXTRA" in the title until it was too late to change it.

Ya you CAN actually change the subject line of your post (it's a fairly short little box), but only for that magic hour :(

I chose not to run BOINC upon startup. I started out with an undersized PC that was already having startup problems, and I was having problems with it starting normally... that PC has since passed away... [a moment of silence please]

So, I don't have one to look at that starts that way. I can only suggest removing it, and reboot and see if it still comes up :) if so, then the one in the startup folder was one of the two, and now you've got it down to just one :) If it does not come up, start it from the start menu, and see if it looks the same when it comes up as what you originally described.

Either way, you can't hurt anything, and will learn something. Report results here. Even if you figure it out. Perhaps someone else will run in to the same problem one day and what to read about what worked for you to resolve it.

I assume that this must be a fairly common problem. I have had this happen to me occasionally for as long as I can remember. I do also start Boinc on startup. I always just open Boinc via the taskbar, then close the wondow, as you mentioned, to make it go away. Sorry, no answer or solution - just validation that it is not just you.
