A cloud server, like at Google Cloud Engine or Amazon AWS.

Google even offers FREE cloud gpu's for use as you please, some people DO crunch with them.

Huh? For free? Them paying for the hardware and electrics? Are they nuts? Can I put bitcoins on them?

This is supposed to be done automatically by Boinc. Both when you install it, when hardware changes, and periodically.
It’s not unconditional. AFAICT from the code, it’s not done on first installation or on a hardware change; only every 30 days or when the client version changes. Even then it only checks at startup – meaning if you install, attach a project and start crunching 24×7, the benchmarks will never get run automatically…
Strange, every single time I've installed boinc over the last 20 years (and I attach to several projects immediately), I see it doing a benchmark first. Sometimes it even annoys me to wait until it starts computing so I can see if it's working.

How is it my i3-2130 is making more credits on work than an i7-4790 which is averaging about 90 or 100 credits per WU.
That’s at least in part because the i7 hasn’t sent Rosetta its performance measurements yet.

Advanced view » Tools menu » Run CPU benchmarks

Ugh. I thought Boinc did this automatically. One more bug.
Thanks for letting me know I'll go ahead and do this now.

The CPU Benchmark is broken and results in very different values than it used to. Is that a BOINC issue or a Ubuntu issue?
When I upgraded from Linux Mint 19 to 20 BOINC went from 7.9.3 to 7.16.6.
Is it right now and it used to be wrong or was it wrong and now it's right?
Anyone know anything about getting it fixed?

AFAIK, the change was due to Ubuntu. I tried upgrading on 18.04 to the latest BOINC and the benchmark remained the same.
On Ubuntu 20.04 and same BOINC version as before, different benchmarks.

At the time, I felt like 20.04 was faster in some projects (SCC at WCG and Universe@home) than 18.04.

Are you sure those aren't related to changes in the OS? Each OS makes changes that can change the processes we use to crunch, ie years ago Linux was far better at getting credits than Windows was but now Windows has pulled even or ahead at more than a few projects. Windows does a bigger overhead so Linux still works far better on low ram systems or systems with older cpu's in them but even some of the newer versions of Linux don't always work well on those older slower pc's.

Hi
My benchmarks are all odd with Linux - Ubuntu 1804.
I'm far too lazy to actually try and upgrade everything to 20.04 with such a small issue unless there is some super amazing things that it will do for me.
I need to retire a lot of these systems - my poor i7-920 and Xeon w3520. Trying to run them into the ground.

Actually you need to get another Xeon w3520 cpu and put them both in a dual cpu board and bang out twice as many tasks as you are right now.

I might replace the i7-920 with one. Currently the dual Xeon 5520 seems to be holding its own even at a lower clock speed.
RAC seems to be quicker about increasing since I performed benchmarks on (I think)? everything. Maybe that's just me.
One day I'll have tons of money to burn and can grab me up 2 threadripper 5950x.
The basement of my house is currently a nice warm area, warmer than upstairs and it's winter.

Pah! I've got four X5650 CPUs in two motherboards. Not the fastest things ever made, but they do 48 tasks at once between them. They're not even in cases, they're loose on a bookshelf, which alarmed someone once who told me I was being very unsociable by letting all the EM interference out. Maybe that's why my neighbour has installed a weird device on his shed to boost a mobile or Wifi signal :-)

It should do it itself when you install Boinc, change hardware, and also periodically, but I've heard that sometimes it forgets. Boinc is so buggy. Why do programmers expect the users to find their mistakes nowadays? Don't they do testing anymore? And why does this forum keep removing my double spacing between sentences?!

One day I'll have tons of money to burn and can grab me up 2 threadripper 5950x.
Don't, the 5950X costs 2.5 times more than the 3900XT, and only goes 1.38 times faster. Always best to buy about the 5th fastest CPU. Let the millionaires throw money at the new ones to pay the development cost.

The basement of my house is currently a nice warm area, warmer than upstairs and it's winter.
Mine are in the garage (5 soon to be 6). Unfortunately the garage is not (yet) connected to the house, so I'm heating the house with electricity and throwing Boinc heat out of the window of the garage. I must get the tarrif "changed" on that meter....

It’s not the forum: it’s your browser. HTML layout requires multiple consecutive space characters to be collapsed into one.
Also, The Mac is not a typewriter

How serious a concern is this? I’ve got four 1U rack servers with their lids off so I can use a quieter cooling solution than the dozen 40 mm turbines in each box. They’re doing a grand job of making the gas central heating redundant, but am I polluting the EM spectrum unawares?

You mean to say the moron who designed html didn't allow for two spaces between words? "& n b s p ;" is 6 bytes, a space is one. What a waste. And I have no idea what you're referring to with that book, I'm not going to read the whole book. And I don't use a Mac.

Probably, but who cares? It'll only be locally. If your neighbours tell you their TV doesn't work, fix it. You'll probably find yours doesn't work either though.

And yeah, tiny fans suck. I bought a 1kW 12V supply to run GPUs. It had a very loud 40mm fan on the back. Which got 10 times louder when it wore out after 1 month. I sawed a hole in the top of the thing and mounted a 120mm fan on the top. Much better. What idiot decided to use a small fan on the end instead of a large fan on the top?

I have a 3700x and might get a 5600 when they're actually available here. But we'll ultimately see.
I haven't seen more than 360 credits per task at Roseta so I wonder if there is a bottleneck in how much a CPU actually gets done due to no AVX/SSE? i5-3570 and Ryzen 3700 get about the same credits per task.
Not that credits are the entire story. I'm just glad the science is getting done.

Sounds low. Are your machines throttled (other than when they’re running the benchmarks)? If not, the Ryzens and fast i7s should be doing better than that. (For comparison, 360 is about the peak for my 4th-gen i5s, which have lower measured performance than many of your CPUs.)

My Ryzen 5 3600 is getting about 440 per 8 hour task so your 3700 should be getting more.

I saw some of the new Ryzens on sale on Ebay, people had paid for them, then left extremely rude feedback because some unscrupulous sellers (including large retail out;lets) are actually taking money for a "pre-order" and not shipping for weeks!
