Recently updated to version 6.4--04/12/06 release.

After about 3minutes, the screensaver causes the GPU to fail, resulting in a card crash and an error report sent to ATI.

This issue did not exist with previous driver, but thought I'd let the board know to troubleshoot if it's not something else.

I've used 6.2 and 6.3 and the Graphics still bombs out. Control centre had to restart the X800 GPU. This problem must be with 4.98. Ran other projects in graphics with no problem.

Temp fix:

I switched so the screensaver goes to blank screen after 1 minute instead of 5 minutes. Problem has not resurfaced.

Maybe 5.01 fixes this problem. I'll check no crashing as yet when I view the graphics.

Problem came back now with a vengeance... maybe 10 seconds until VPU crash now. Were you talking about Rosetta 5.01 or Catalyst?

You could also give the newer boinc clients a go (dev versions)
I remember some screensaver type fixes throughout the development

There has been fixes to the screensaver in the newer boinc dev versions. There have always been issues reported with some ATI cards, although I don't remember the specific nature of the errors. What I remember is that users were recommended by other users was to either upgrade driver versions or stop using the screensaver. I don't know if your card has the issue, since I can't remember what the issues were.

Wouldn't hurt to make sure you have the latest video driver and update to the latest developmental version of boinc.

The 5.01 update made it better. It still makes the VPU fail, however, it doesn't freeze the whole system in the process. Takes 2-5 minutes, random but never longer than 5 min (when I had set it to go blank.) 1min works fine again.

Asfar as I know, they havn't altered anything in the screensaver code for a while (since the guy who created it has moved within the university or similar, think over to actual boinc ?)

Anyways, Since it's OpenGL and ATI have never had the best OpenGL setup.
The VPU Recovery normally kicks in with overheating, though I cannot see why the screensaver whould overheat the card ;-) mind since you stop the screensaver after a time and it's fine you may want to check you fans.
Also try disabling the VPU recovery
Make sure your not forcing any AA etc... (ignore if you don't know what I'm on about)
Also send all the VPU recoveries into ATI so they can diagnose it :-)
Another thing is to make sure you have the latest DirectX (even if you have 9.0c try the newest release since they do alter it using the same name version, I know this as once version of 9.0c doesn't work with CivilizationIV, but a newer version of 9.0c does.. mad isn't it)

another thing is to check for motherboard driver updates, since it may actually be that causing a problem....

Maybe ATI can also have a look into it ?

I notice your last result was returned using boinc 5.2.13 (the core part of rosetta/boinc including boincmanager, not the 5.01 science application)
I linked to a developer version than gone through lots of bug fixes and development and seems to work very well)

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php?min_version=5.0&dev=1 again for convenience.

Try the latest 5.4.6 vesion (could be newer by the time you read it and see if that help, just install as normal :)

I feel obliged to mention that "developmental boinc builds" are, well, developmental. This means they can and do sometimes contain bugs. Use at your own risk.

That said, the only ones I've had any problems with lately are 5.3.29, 5.3.30, and 5.4.5(the first version that they have subsequently changed).

Hi, I have suddenly developed a problem which is I think down to one of the BOINC applications on my machine. I normally run the screen saver for about an hour before the machine drops to blank screen. In the last few weeks (2?) I have been finding my machine completly locked up with a blank screen. I have to reboot to recover the system. I suspect it is one of the graphical applications running with BIONC. I presently run, Rosetta, Predictor, Climate, and Seti.

I have an ATI Radeon 700 card.......

I have suspended Rosetta to see if the problem disappears when only running the others apps only. I have had problems with the Rosetta app on the ATI card before but I have always had a recovery through the ATI manager.

See what develops.

See what develops.

Peter, Boinc 5.4.4, 5.4.5, and 5.4.6 have addressed some of these issues. Also, make sure Boinc.scr has internet access.

Thanks for the information,
I'll leave it running overnight to see what develops, I seem to have no problems at the minute. Tomorrow I'll load the latest BOINC application and see how it performs.

Well since I suspended Rosetta I have had no problems at all, my machine has run continuosly. I am now going to resume rosetta and see if things re-occur. I have done some tweaks to the setup so there is a chance that it will be ok.

I just looked at your recently retuned tasks

One seems to have errored out and using the latest 5.07 rosetta

<core_client_version>5.2.13</core_client_version>
<message>Incorrect function. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
# random seed: 1559549
# cpu_run_time_pref: 10800
ERROR:: Exit at: .dock_structure.cc line:401

</stderr_txt>

which is a new one on me.

Any idea if this was when the screen saver kicked in ?

EDIT/ https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/result.php?resultid=18906772
and to add this is a CASP6 job problem since it errored on another computer as well. So ignore it ;-)
