Yes... the script would be a one-by one.. to send to all in your mail, using your existing mail client, what I'd do is use a mailto: link to fill out the subject and body, and then the user would have to select his recipents, in his mail client. The limitation with the script, is that to try and restrict spamming, it has to be 1 by one.

If you can just pop-up their registered EMail client, and get it to include the yet to be written "compelling message" (with HTML graphics) in the body... then the person could just copy/paste a whole list of receipients... and the EMail is sent by... well the sender, so it offers nothing to SPAMers. I think that's much cleaner, and leaves the referrer in control of what being said and to whom.

Do mailto: links work that way? I mean can an HTML formatted message be defaulted into the body?

To see an early version (and try it out) of the script, go here:
http://www.blue-world.co.uk/personal/email_friend/email_friend.php.
At the moment, that version has a couple of bugs (it triggers the webmaster warning when it should'nt), and hasnt got a couple of features that I'm working on.

Edit: Due to security considerations, I will not let the script send more than one e-mail to a friend at one time.

Jonathon, would there be a difference between using the script to invite our friends to Rosetta@home one by one and just emailing all e.g. 50 contacts in our address-book from our email app (e.g. Outlook/Thunderbird/mail.app/NetscapeMail)?

Well, the link works. I tested it and as soon as it is truly ready I will use it to send to my 47 team members (21 or so with actual credit) who are mainly contributing to SETI only. It's also a good way to wake up dormant teammates that have been lost through time and computer changes, etc. I'm sure there are a ton of teams out there like mine that only have a handful of members that the team founder can renew contact with in this way.....

The 'tell a friend' function will be spectacular once implemented! Can't wait!

I was wrong, I cant use the mailto: link to do it that way. (i've been doing some reading).
So I'm going to have to find someway of making the image verification then.

Hokay.. this mite take a while. In the meantime, there's now a preview function on the script.

I was wrong about it taking a while. I managed to find an existing package, and I've worked that into the script. Soon, you should be able to send more than one e-mail, with each address seperated by a comma.

Hey!! New team support on the website! "show top teams" has catagories added for various types of schools (and companies, and universities, and government agencies). Check it out.

I wish the Rosetta Volunteers could take credit for such a rapid improvement :) but we're currently focused on the tell-a-friend function.

Wait a minute! That's been there all along hasn't it? Cool, means we can just add a few links to more easily get to the top schools. The teams were already catagorized.

So I tried this out and I know its a work in progress but there is always room for constructive criticism :)

The verification "word" is really difficult to read sometimes, took me 3 tries before I got it right.

Also I emailed myself after noticing that the preview function didn't actually show the link to go to Boinc or Rosetta I instead got this:

"So why dont you download it <here?>. Or for more information, go <here>."

Sounds like a great idea, I have an email list of a couple hundred just waiting to get going!!

Tim

constructive criticism... The verification "word" is really difficult to read...

Thanks for taking the time to review and offer constructive comments. I offered the same critque to the volunteer working on the project last night. I clicked through 7 of them before I found one I thought I could read, and when I entered that one, I got it wrong! We'll work on it. I also had the same comment as well that the text implies it is a hidden "word", but seems to be random letters instead.

The message preview is presently a placeholder. We're still working on the actual form and content of the message we intend to send. So, the URL is really a test of the mechanics of delivering the message and halting spammers at this point. When we have a draft of the message that we ourselves are happy with, we plan to post a reference and to encourage community review and comments before sending the work back to the project to incorporate.

So, we're working on it. Thanks again for taking the time. Please check again in a few days, we need more minds working together to help Rosetta... and mankind.

I'm going to set the system onto using a dictionary.. makes it easier to crack, but easier to determine. So it will be a "word" :) I've just got to find the time to do it.. been a bit manic atm.... got a interview comming up, and got to get there first (Long trek!)

I'll do it as soon as I get round to it! (usually on the train!)

EDIT:Make it make more sense

Ok, I just went through and resampled your system. I got about half right I presume. I've noticed the testables rely les on individual alphabetical recognitions than on common word recognitions. If these are too hard to decipher then I suggest toning down the 'scrambling'. My two cents.

The scramblings pretty much out of my control, and its a vital part of making sure that the script isnt abused too badly.
I'll see what I can do tho..

Regular Expressions are a coding construct, which I', using to help validate inputs.. I'm having some trouble with them atm... could do with some help!

Hi Johnathon:

I'm not a programmer, but I took a quick look at source code for the test page that you set up. It's javascript, right?

I don't know javascript, so looking at the part that says "RegExp" is Greek to me. However, I found a website that lets you test a javascript regular expression:

http://www.regular-expressions.info/javascriptexample.html

Maybe it will be of help in debugging this.

Sean

No, its not ;) The javascript is just the bit you can see, the regex expression I'm using is in the php, using the ereg function.

Edit:
Thanks for the suggestion though!

There's a link to info on regular expressions in php on the left side of the page, but I'm not sure it's detailed enough to be of help to you.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance. Good luck!

Sorry to double post but

Johnathon runs around the room screeming at the top of his voice:
IT WORKS!
IT WORKS!
YIPPIE!
YAYAYAYAYAAYAYAYAYAAYAYAYAAYAYAY!!!!

Ahem,

I have to say a big thanks to wade of annodyne productions for his help!

Now, to work on that boilerplate. Feet, sorry i havent looked at your example yet (its priority 1 tagged in my mail client - nice and red highlighting!), I'll have a look soon.
But right now I want to put my feet up, and RELAX. Its been a stressful day - interview, quite a long way away - 4 hour trip. On the train, 'tube and train.

Could you guys try it out for me? Check it fully, hammer it with requests, that sorta thing. Just take note, I've set the delay to 10 seconds now.

Its here: http://www.blue-world.co.uk/personal/email_friend/email_friend.php

It looks good.

My only problem is I can't read the security word down at the bottom. The colors are too similar to my colorblind eyes :) I've never had a problem with ticketmaster, or other sites that use that type of security. Is it possible to use colors further apart on the spectrum?

Cheers
-Ethan

...boy, we, as a group, REALLY test these things! Jonathan, I think the codewords are MUCH more clear to read now than they were before. Although, ya, we need to take into account coloration for both red-green and blue-yellow color blindness.

"Housing..." when to click through to show another codeword, were you able to find some that were more clear to you? I'm attempting to ask, if we happen to hit a set where you can't see ANY of them? Or was it roughly 50/50? Or, how much were you able to see?
