What about advertising in college/university newspapers? Should be cheaper than other newspapers and target the right demographic - students should be computer literate enough to install BOINC and there's a good chance some understand the science behind it.

Although I have no idea what kind of circulation they have, or how expensive it is to advertise in them.

I like the idea of a PDF that would contain a well presented promotional package. I just converted my powerpoint presentation to PDF, maybe this is a starting point? PDF is available here

I'm going to fire up InDesign later and see if I can't get a better title screen done... this one was made for a black background and animation, as seen in the presentation. (if you haven't seen it yet, it's on http://www.myspace.com/bakerlab)

From the monorail you would see KOMO TV, which is a ABC affiliate. There studios and related office space are used in the early shots of Grey's Anatomy, though it is filmed for the most part in California.

You wouldn't see KING as they are farther down the road.
KIRO is hidden a short distance from KOMO but you can not see them from the monorail.

You might look into colleges and universities with large biology and computer science programs as a target market and also watch were Dr Baker goes with his new school program. College papers are way cheaper than commercial mass market papers or research journals. But I still like the idea of trying to get research journals in on this project since those are the people that understand this stuff way better than any of us.

Your first page after the title page is not entirely factful.
There is no way this research at this current moment can eliminate Cancer or Alzheimers. Better wording would be "Help find a way to better understand how Cancer,Alzheimers and CF(abbreviation for Cystic Fibrosis) work on a Atomic/Protien level." Something along this line would be more truthful.

Also the credit statement should be eliminated as each user gets a different amount of credit due to his time settings for the WU and also which WU the person gets. So there is no real way to compare straight across credits to credits. To many variables involved.

Add something along the lines that the research is funded by grants from the Gates Foundation and the Howard Hughes (group? foundation?)

RMSD is what? you might want to explain that or come up with something different to put in its place.

CASP6 you might want to explain as well, for a non science person thats just some acronym.

Those are my suggestions and comments.

Well, I think the PDF is a great start, and that Greg's comments are a little too critical. Since Bakerlab HAS submitted HIV vaccine candidates, you would be most timely if you said HIV rather then cancer and Alzheimers. And once you "better understand" those, you'll be able to use Rosetta to knock them out by creating a targetted docking agent, so it is just a matter of how far down the road of this reasearch you are talking about. And we've already crunched some work to help with Alzheimer's research.

I thought his description of RMSD was pretty good ("shows how close to reality the model is"). Perhaps saying "shows how close to the true structure this model is". It might be good to get a screenshot with the sidechains... once they enable them again.

All of the publicity ideas rekindled here are great. What Dr. Baker has said in the past is basically on the order of "you set it up, and I'll be there". Many local stations don't produce many shows. We can all help by submitting EMails to various science shows suggesting Rosetta as a topic. How about Nova?

CNN, at least the internet version, already has done a story on Rosetta, at about the same time many publications picked up an article written by the Associated Press, and there was a noticible bump up in hosts added each day.

So, these ideas DO work. But it takes a small army to keep after the press... hey!! We HAVE a "small army" here! Just count the number of people that have contributed to this thread. Perhaps we should start a "hit list" of URLs where such shows are requesting ideas for show topics.

Does anyone have any contacts within the Red Cross? Or American (or any country's) Caner Society? Or Alzheimer's or AIDS groups?

Is Alan Alda still doing Scientific American Frontiers? Rosetta would be a perfect fit for that program.


(I really like the idea of an "American Caner Society" by the way. I just wouldn't want to get them angry. ;)

Careful there, that's NOT actually a Yahoo! article. So EMailing Yahoo! isn't going to help. That was an ariticle written by the Associated Press, which, as I said previously, already has done an article specific to Rosetta.

Once such an article is written, it is available to any of the subscribers of the Associated Press. Your local paper may or may not choose to run the article if they are a member of the Associated Press.

I can contact the most popular national paper in Belgium. That should be no problem because they already wrote about Seti@home, Second Life, Hattrick and other popular webitems in their multimediasection. Hum...

I too think the PDF is a good start. Some of the science needs bringing up to date as we've now finished CASP7, etc.
I intend to have a go at rewriting this soon but it will probably have to wait till the weekend as real life if a bit hectic at the moment.

With regard to student newspapers, will try to find out if advertising is available in ours (I'm at The University of Durham) and let you know.

That's cool, I'm at Mary's too (though I'm a liver-out at the moment). If you want to send me a proper e-mail, searching the University directory for Baker will find me (I'm the SJ at Mary's). I was thinking 'Palatinate' was the way to go (our University newspaper) but I don't know anything about advertising in it.

Just to be clear here, there is no shortage of ideas about WHERE to spread the word. So there is no need to post to this thread with ideas about organizations that SHOULD be interested in giving some publicity.

What's needed, is people to make contact and get some agreement to run a story or do an interview or place an ad. But you will find that paid advertising is too expensive, and will begin to have an understanding of why the products you buy cost so much. And why many of the corporations that produce these products and advertise them are so very large.

So, the purpose of this thread is to help people answer the question of "What can I personally do to help spread the word about Rosetta?"

If it's reasonable, I'd be willing to pony up a couple of dollar$ to put one of those "Do you Boinc?" ads in a local college newspaper. Any copyright issues?

Our marketing department made the posters, so no, no copyright issues :)

We've emailed our student body, held contests, put two posters per floor, and made CD's with Boinc already configured and gave copies to all 100 of our Resident Advisors. In the end I think we might have had 3 percent of the students living in the res halls.

It's very tough to convince folks to join. While an ad could work, my history is that you don't gain many users for what seems like a lot of effort (designing, printing and posting posters, making 100 cd's and labels, etc).

The associated press article, word of mouth, and things like the video seem to do the best since they're not perceived as 'sales pitches'.
