Why doesn't this forum have the option to report a particular thread like over on the SETI boards?? then at least someone could report something offensive straight from the guilty post Also Janus is rewriting forum code over @BURP so maybe that could be implemented over here when he has finished it all Join us in Chat (see the forum) Click the Sig Join UBT |

Why doesn't this forum have the option to report a particular thread like over on the SETI boards?? then at least someone could report something offensive straight from the guilty post The forum structure is not the same as SETI. Their boards are not completely standard. The moderators here have to work within the confines of the tools we have here. That said I think the rating buttons at the bottom of each post could be used for that purpose. EDIT - just tested this and if you click on the "X" at the bottom of the post it will do exactly what you are asking for. Moderator9 ROSETTA@home FAQ Moderator Contact |

there are no X's at the bottom of the page I assume you mean the ones like on BURP, SETI & other projects? Look right under your signature in your last post. You will see a place to rate the post. One of the icons is a dark box with an "X" in it. If you click that box it will allow you to report the post as objectionable. Moderator9 ROSETTA@home FAQ Moderator Contact |

It isnt there just like I mentioned inmy previous post the + & - button is there but no X Well I can't explain that one. I have looked at this as both a moderator and a normal user, and the box is three under both ids. So I have no reason why it is not there for you, but I will ask one of the project people about this. There is a chunk of bad code that corrupts the height of the 'x'. It was identified and fixed on the SETI board, but obviously hasn't been propagated out to all the projects yet. <a href="forum_report_post.php?post=9870"><img src="img/report_post.png" alt="Report this post as offensive" height="img/report_post.png" border=0></a> Anyone familiar with html will see that the height parameter is invalid. It displays properly with Firefox, but not with IE. Go figure. Proudly Banned from Predictator@Home and now Cosmology@home as well. Added SETI to the list today. Temporary ban only - so need to work harder :) "You can't fix stupid" (Ron White) |

There is a chunk of bad code that corrupts the height of the 'x'. Yea, I can see the x box (not the game) myself plain as day. I am on a Mac using safari so the IE issue would not apply. So you are saying it is a browser problem related to bad code. Thanks for this post I was wondering what this was about. There is a chunk of bad code that corrupts the height of the 'x'. Right! Firefox and other non-Microsquish browsers just ignore the bad height parameter, but IE makes it something like 0 or 1 pixel high, so essentially invisible. The correct parameter should be height="9" Proudly Banned from Predictator@Home and now Cosmology@home as well. Added SETI to the list today. EDIT - just tested this and if you click on the "X" at the bottom of the post it will do exactly what you are asking for. Actually, I just tested it and get the following after filling in the dialog box: This project has not yet defined an administrator to handle this kind of forum reports. Please contact the project and tell them to add this information in their html/project/project.inc file This was reported by me quite a while ago (mid December?) in the NC forum. Why doesn't this forum have the option to report a particular thread like over on the SETI boards?? then at least someone could report something offensive straight from the guilty post Click the , and you get the mod's attention. It says, when you click it: Why do you find the post offensive: Please include enough information so that a person that has not yet read the thread will quickly be able to identify the issue. so you must express why you report this particular post. The long discussions about moderators, who they are, their participation in the discussions, and their legality to do so as moderators, caused the special moderator accounts, they can use in their capacity as mods to post with. These accounts should not be used to post personal messages such as this: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=986#9820 So Moderator9, I think you should remove your post and promote your team as yourself. I thought moderators could not alter posts here - only delete (hide) or move them. Proudly Banned from Predictator@Home and now Cosmology@home as well. Added SETI to the list today. Temporary ban only - so need to work harder :) "You can't fix stupid" (Ron White) |

I think what he did Angus was delete mine but rewrite it, hence it appeared to be his ! I will rewrite on his request to save the speculation. As far as I am aware K9 or any other number have nothing to do with the Teddies. Edit : I`ve reposted so Mod 9 can delete his. Not all Czech`s bounce but I`d like to try with Barbar ;-) Make no mistake This IS the TEDDIES TEAM. |

Angus Responded: I thought moderators could not alter posts here - only delete (hide) or move them. Carl.h Responded: I think what he did Angus was delete mine but rewrite it, hence it appeared to be his ! Fuzzy Hollynoodles, This team advertisement was originally posted by Carl.h. It contained some text that I felt could potentially be viewed by other teams or readers as provocation for a flaming session. So I tried to simply notify Carl.h of the problem so he could edit it. I have no way to send a PM to any users, so my only option was to delete the post. Since the post was in compliance with the rules for that thread in every respect save about five words, which were in no way profane, and in almost any other setting could be interpreted as light hearted humor, I felt it was inappropriate for me to simply delete the post outright (after all I had asked people to post there and encouraged a measure of lightheartedness). Initially I was going to ask Carl.h to edit the post by posting a request on the thread for him to do so, but the 1 hour edit period had already expired, and even if it had not it was unlikely that he would have seen the message in time to make the edit himself. Besides, I did not want to leave the post up so long that people might start reacting to it. Now we get to the question Angus raised- I decided to respond to Carl.h's post and request he repost it with some alteration to the language and planned to delete the original. As I was responding, I realized I could just remove the language myself which was contained in a parenthetical aside in the text of the post. Because of that formating I could remove the language and not change the main thrust of the post, which was to advertise that team. As it turns out this requires no special moderator powers. i simply hit the reply button, deleted the text, and hit the post button. After that I deleted carl.h's original post and provided him a brief explanation of what I had done and why in the auto responder field provided for that purpose. So Carl.h's explanation quoted above, is exactly what happened. I will respectfully decline to respond to the part of your question relating to any team affiliations I may or may not have for this project. Now here is the nub of the issue. While the team thread has been established for the use and advertisement of the teams working the project, and I hope people will enjoy it, have some fun with their posts there, and benefit from its use, I and other moderators will moderate that thread more heavily than any others on these boards because the standard of conduct there is much higher than anywhere else. Over time I would expect many of the posts there to require updating and editing. I have offered limited services to update them for people to include links to other threads, and that sort of thing in case some of the people are not familiar with BB-code or just need help. So I guess this issue will be raised, every time I work on that thread. I hope this explanation is satisfactory to answer your question. I feel it is important for the moderation team to be completely open about their activities in moderating the boards, and that is precisely why I established this thread. That said, I do not feel that a detailed explanation of every action or decision taken by a moderator should be expected, nor is it warranted. So I would hope people would not come to expect lengthy and detailed explanations such as this on every issue in the future. I will address questions and issues, but with some degree of brevity. {Moderator note: The chain of posts related to this issue has been moved to the archive for this thread located here.} Moderator9 ROSETTA@home FAQ Moderator Contact |

I'd add that I support m9's actions here. My suggestion of the best way to deal with this kind of situation in future is a three stage process, based on what actually happened here. Thanks also to carl.h for his re-post which implied his graceful acceptance of the moderation. 1. the mod to edit out the offending words in a reply, but leave the whole of the quoted text shown as quoted, and mention who made the original posting. This avoids the understandable implication that the mod is posting on their own behalf - I wonder how many others thought as FH did that m9 was plugging his own team?. Explanation of the deletion to go by email as happened here. 2. Then the original contributor can 'reply' to the mod's posting, taking out the quotes (double quotes by now) and making any other non-offensive changes they feel appropriate. 3. Once any mod sees 2 has been done (and if they are now happy with the new posting!) they delete the mod posting. This leaves no permanent trace of the fact that moderation was needed. It seems to me that this process allows mods to do our job, allows the original contributor the chance to make their own version of cleaning up an unwise posting, and once it is all sorted the posting stands in the name of is true author. If the original contributor doesn't bother to do 2, then the message in 1 would stand, of course. An even better solution, not immediately possible, would be if the original contributor could still see their deleted post and edit it. A mod could then undelete it. Parts of that process already exist but parts would need new coding from BOINC m8 |

I'm getting just slightly annoyed that so many posts are getting moved around between threads. I have a pretty good memory where I or others posted things, and when I return to look fo responses or continue a discussion, the posts have gone - somewhere. The latest one of mine seems to have been moved to someplace other that what the mod said. The continuity of many discussions, IMHO, is getting ripped apart. The culture of these forums was for some longer threads to meander a bit, even before the slight uproar of the last month. I don't think that is bad, if it doesn't go wildly off topic. My *personal* opinion is that the 'organization' is too heavy handed at this point. Frankly, I leave here after every visit ever more disturbed by this. It is not a fun place to visit, if you have to spend a half hour tracking down posts that seem to now reside in out-of-context threads. EDIT - just tested this and if you click on the "X" at the bottom of the post it will do exactly what you are asking for. What happened to the posts about why the 'x' is not appearing in some browsers? That is a topic that obviously should kept visible (pun intended) until it is resolved.
