since the filter doesn't seem to work, i think i will reply to poor poor angus's little hissy fit.

dude, get a life. we would welcome you if you would be more positive and would quit complaining like a spoil sport.

while there are two of us being a bit more vocal than the others, we are here to have fun. if you can't have fun what the ---- are you doing here in the cafe anyway?

and if you look at some of the other threads there are more than just two of us having FUN here.

so sorry to say this, but take your spoil sport soul somewhere else and let those of us who are here to have fun, have fun.

end of story

So your idea of "fun" is quoting nursery rhymes to each other. How cute and adult of you.

How ironic that you advise me to "get a life" and you and your playmate spend your time and 95% of your posts playing silly words games.

And then you act like schoolkids running to the teacher when someone tells you your game is childish and a waste of time (not to mention bandwidth and server space).

Sorry you feel that your forum experience is being interferred with Hugo. I did attempt to delete specific, clearly off-topic posts as I noticed them to remove such interferrence.

question on filtering lame users
i was told recently to add a certain users number into the filter, however i see his posts in other threads i participate in and they are still the same old lame thing as when i first asked in here how to get rid of this user from my viewing.

the id of the user is in the filter, but they still show up. is something not working right? i thought the filter would eliminate them from all posts i view.

When a user is in your filter list, you should see something like this any time they post:

This post has been filtered (rating: 0) and the user is on your ignore list, press here to view this thread without filtering

...is that not what you are seeing?

=========
A negative rating indicates that a user has clicked the pink minus sign under the message. In fact, a -1 indicates that of all the users that have voted on that message, one user more pressed the minus sign(-) then pressed the plus sign(+).

Check your message board preferences. You have the option of setting a rating filter. It is called "Filter threshold". If a post receives more negative votes then your prefernce, then it will be filtered as well as the users in your list.

My filter threshold is set to -25 (default) and greg's id is now in my ignore list. The message with a filter setting of 0 shows up with no problem, but the message that has a filter setting of -1 says that the message is hidden because the poster is being ignored.

I'm using firefox 2.0; but this isn't the effect I'd expect from the filtering/ignoring. (Time to empty out my ignore list and set my filter threshold back to where I had it.)

The rating system has also been abused by members of a certain team to try to hide the recruiting post of my team. We had to have several members positive rate the post to counter the actions of that other team. Seems to be a bad feature and possibly for that reason not used on other BOINC boards.

So - what's the issue/problem? It sounds as if it's working OK.

The post doesn't disappear completely - just the message text is hidden until you click "here".

Sounds like the issue is that posts with -1 rating are being filtered when they do not match the filter criteria. I will try it out my self here.

The description of the ignore feature made it sound like someone on the ignore list would have to get positive ratings high enough to hit the emphasis rating to show up. But they show up at 0 for the default settings, which makes the setting - pointless.

Nemesis,

certain messages were not filtered before a certain user came to light.
since then alot of messages have been filtered to -1 and even replies are at -1.
if you have a look over in team synergy, all their messages are -1 filtered. So that is why I ask why the filter if there is nothing wrong with them. I think that Mod is thinking the same as I am, other than I have no idea what the filter limit is or how it works.

So - what's the issue/problem? It sounds as if it's working OK.

positive ratings or not, when you want a person ignored, they should be filtered out of the forum they are in when you go view that forum. That is what a proper ignore should do and not be subject to what ratings system that can be manipulated to suit the person or friends of the persons interest.

The ratings system (+/-) is independent of the manual user filter process in the Forum Preferences.

Two different things.

You can put a user number in your filter list in Forum Preferences and it should block the message body content of all of their posts on this site. You will still see the header (the post number, date, user nick, etc.) and possibly the signature. So - you can see that they posted but you don't have to read their content unless you wish to.

You can also set your rating (+/-) filter level to filter the content of post that have ratings outside of your preferences, such as all posts with ratings worse than -5, or -25. The instructions in Message Board Preferences do lead one to believe that messages with a high ratings level (many +s) will override the manual filter list. Questions about that functionality would be best asked over on the BOINC message boards, as that is where those that program the forum software hang out.

The ratings system is a means for people to anonymously rate the content of a post, and has been the topic of much - umm - controversy in the BOINC community. Ratings wars were common at SETI.

I guess you should set your emphasis level higher.

Allow me to describe how I believe it should work, and does work for me (under my normal user ID) and then please post if your experience differs.

If you add a specific user ID to your filtered users list in the message board preferences, then when there is a post by that user, regardless of the "rating" it has been given by other users, it will be omitted with a message as follows:

This post has been filtered (rating: 0) and the user is on your ignore list, press http://here to view this thread without filtering

Where "rating: 0" will reflect the current rating of the post. Positive or negative... or zero.

The other control is the filter threshold. If you put in zero, it doesn't mean NOT to filter, it means ANY post with a rating less then zero will be omitted from your display, regardless of the author. The default for this value is -25. Note: NEGATIVE 25. This means if a post received 25 more negative votes then positive, it would be omitted from your view.

If your filter threshold was the cause of the post being omitted, the message has the following form:
This post has been filtered (rating: -1), press http://here to view this thread without filtering

Where "rating: -1" would be one or more less then the filter in your message board preferences. Since the message does not mention the user being on your ignore list, that was not the cause of it being omitted, it was the filter threshold.

So, for those of you finding that a single negative vote is omitting posts from your view, it sounds like you've set your filter threshold to zero. And if this is not what you want, then perhaps the default of -25 would be more to your likeing.

Please note that the project and moderators do not establish these ratings, they come from the user community. Please also note that the project does not omit messages with a -1 rating... unless you've requested it do so via your message board preferences.

the filter part of things does not work properly, as is the case in word link where the user posted and still shows up in the forum.

all i have done there is to add the user to the ignore list which seems not to work.

i have not changed any filter settings as of yet, i will go check those a bit later.

So you can see a post from your filtered user, without this text (regardless of the rating score) and you can see the text of their post?
This post has been filtered (rating: 0) and the user is on your ignore list, press here to view this thread without filtering

Remember, you can still see that the filtered user has posted - it doesn't become invisible.
