I currently have a number of Computers PC's on my Home network but I don't know if they will be any good at Crunching RAH. I done FAH for a long time but I'm completely new to RAH and the Open DC side of it. I done FAH for a long time but I'm completely new to RAH and the Open DC side of it. I don't know much about FAH (Fighting Neglected Diseases?) . All of your machines appear to support 64-bit execution. You are running Ubuntu on the machines but I cannot tell if the installed version is 32-bit or 64-bit. RAH is/was running 32-bit applications using the x87 floating point unit and they would run fine on either 32-bit or 64-bit Ubuntu. RAH developers are looking at upgrading the app to 64-bit/SSE2 (and beyond) and even those new ones should work with your equipment if you have 64-bit Ubuntu loaded. If you by chance have a 64-bit GPU board installed, I have been able to get the GPU OpenCl configured to accept some OpenCL GPU jobs too from other projects: Seti, PrimeGrid and MilkyWay. |

Hi Spud1200, I looked a little closer at the configuration of your machines and you are running very light on memory. RAH is a memory hog. I am currently running 4 RAH jobs on my machine and they are taking 265MB, 219MB, 325MB and 430MB. You can expect You may already be running in to paging problems with the apps you are currently running. If you run "vmstat 1" which will display the system status on a 1 second interval, I expect you are already seeing swapping (si and so activity). I would probably not run RAH on any of the machines with less than 4GB of memory and I would keep an eye on performance. A random link for vmstat info .... Given that each machine looks to only have 1 to 2 cores, I think the memory allocation should be alright actually. I even have an 8 core (well, 4 +HT) with just 4GB memory running without any issues, though it does hit the page file sometimes. With that said, the couple of machines I looked at on your list have 2 cores and 2GB of memory, or 1 core with 1GB of memory - either way, a GB available per core - which is more than enough for RAH. Welcome Aboard (I hope!) PS - Given that your rigs aren't sporting any usable GPUs I think RAH is a fantastic candidate project to contribute to as it's CPU dependent and the science being done here is legitimately interesting and useful in moving the needle of human knowledge forward. |
