(and it it flashes you'd cetrtainly notice ;-))

Though as for the example, there nothing stopping Rosetta putting naming restrictions in, e.g. deny all Mod***** names etc.

Though anything could be cloned really, just takes a hacker/cracker with nothing worthwhile in there lifes to do.


Though I don't think we should worry about that for now, this is more about everyday 'letting people know easily'.

I'm not sure about that either, Bird-Dog. I'm not in shape for that, and the female/male ratio isn't causing divide by zero errors. <whistles innocently>

When reading through the threads, I usually catch the unusual titles under poster's names like Ethan and Dekim. Others don't. No one approach works for everyone.

Are there more suggestions or samples of artwork for a "Standard Rosetta Moderator" avatar that can be personalized?

Something I've noticed reading the quotes of my posts is that my batteries on the Keyboard have been running out, that and the newer laptops keyboard isn't so nice.

So Batteries changed (I really should take notice of the warning the flashes up). Have to live with the laptop, but I don't use it that much since the older one is much nicer to use :-)


Maybe the mods could put a little bit of why they moderate in their mod profile. That adds an extra profile icon as well :-)

Yes I belive we may be getting some profile bits set up in our mod profiles in the future, nothing set in stone at the moment.

A few people have mentioned that they'd like us to have an Avatar that makes us obvious. I've been told to ask for your help. Like the mice in the story, please offer suggestions. If you're artistic, feel free to share your vision. The goal is to draw attention to the phrase under our name. To prove that we're not normal users. Keep in mind the ideas need to be appropriate for the board. Creative and stunning is good. Something more practical than giving a Circle K brand to a relative moving onto a farm. And sending them a pic of The Circle K Boneless Chicken Ranch.

Let's see your ideas on how to draw attention to our title. Forcing people to learn Latin is probably out.

Clever, evil plot.. Inspire a horde of aspiring John Cleeses to show up and perform the scene from Life of Brian demanding I correct that phrase to "Romani Ite Domum." How to add on helpful advice to that command, like, "turn on your computers, and run Rosetta."?

Does "Moderato" even mean anything close to Moderate, or will those that at least passed their 1st year Latin class be teasing me about not using terms like "tempero" instead?

Actually the verb you're looking for could be "moderor", means "to direct", "to temper". The verb uses the a-conjugation, so "I moderate" should be "modero"... So the sentence would be "Modero ergo sum".

Hm, just checked the list of countries contributing to Rosetta. There is unfortunately no one from the Vatican - they'd probably be able to help. ;-) Now about "I moderate...", dusting off my Latin dictionary and grammer, it seems "to moderate" is "moderi" in Latin, and "I moderate" would be "moderor" (it is one of those verbs with passive form but active meaning). So my non-expert vote would be "Moderor ergo sum"... ;-)

"Cogito, ergo sum" is a well known Latin phrase that many recognize. How many average, non-latin-speaking people do I lose by switching from faux-Latin (Moderato) to actual latin (Moderor)?

Verb is "moderare", not "modere", so "moderat" does make sense in real latin. It has been some time that I needed Latin grammar but your "moderatum" does not sound wrong to me.

"non-existing" is not totally correct, it's more like "a bit moldy", not too surprising after ~30 years - even if there are just a few relics intact, it sometimes helps to understand written sentences from other languages.

If the answers keep changing, it's hard to pick which one is more right. <grin> I just made up Moderatum, so I'm shocked that it's anywhere close to meaning what I was after.

My exposure to learning Latin in school was a challenge made by a teacher. He bet that nobody in the class knew what A.D. stood for, what it meant, and what language it was in. He bet one million Tooty Fruity Milkshakes.
I stated that it was Anno Domini; that it meant "In the year of our Lord"; and then the bit that permanently marked this as a Latin phrase in my mind.. identified that the language was "Hebrew". That was the last time the teacher bet our class over obscure trivia.

Any more samples of concepts for official Rosetta Moderator Avatars? (You're not going to let R.L. Casey get away with being the only one to post an idea, are you?) Give us some inspiration while we wait to see if changes to the forum software to make staff & moderator accounts stand out, are possible here.

I'm curious. Is there a web site that will translate either of those phrases? And is there a link to a page about the bowl's discovery and why it is considered unique?
