Message 113034 - Posted: 25 Aug 2025, 20:57:31 UTC

I am not some hot shot coder, but I have been running Rosetta for years on 3 home computers. This MSG started coming up several months ago. I tried refreshing Rosetta and reloaded BOINC with no results. My computers are running WIN 10. I stopped running Rosetta when I could not resolve this issue.

I would like to resume running Rosetta. But if it requires code changing I would need guidance.

What is the solution?

Something changed at Rosetta's end a few months ago, which took us all by surprise.
The servers we had been using became unavailable and some clever people here worked out which ones we should now point to.
Everyone had this problem - it's certainly not anything you've done wrong.
But to correct it, you do have to make a relatively simple change to a file on your computer called "hosts", but in a particular way, as follows:

To edit the hosts file in Windows using Notepad - at location C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts - follow these steps:
<Open Notepad as Administrator>
Search for "Notepad" in the Windows search bar.
Instead of left-clicking it, right-click on Notepad and select "Run as administrator"
When the dialog box pops up select Yes

<To open the Hosts File>
In Notepad
Go to File > Open.
Navigate to C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc which will appear empty
Change the file type filter at bottom right from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files"
Select the "hosts" file that appears and click "Open"

<Edit the hosts File>
On a fresh line at the bottom, type

#Rosetta@home
128.95.160.156 boinc-files.bakerlab.org
128.95.160.156 bwsrv1.bakerlab.org

Save the file with no extension in the same location - simply 'hosts' not 'hosts.txt'

That should be it - no need to reboot.
Return to Boinc manager, select Rosetta and click the "Update" button

Rosetta should no longer report "Server error: feeder not running"
However, tasks at Rosetta have run out and we've had nothing for some weeks, so you're unlikely to see anything come down.
It's just that, if new tasks do become available in future, you'll be able to get your share in the way you previously used to.

Glad it worked.
There's no way any ordinary user would know this is the change to make.
And when we've talked about it in the forums, the conversation and solution is almost impossible to find by now.
So you did exactly the right thing to ask so that the solution could be re-up'd for other users to see.
I've no doubt it won't be the last time either.

Now to wait for some work to come through...

Very helpful, but why wasn't this announced?

Because those responsible for the project don't pay the slightest bit of attention to it.
If they did, there would be no need to announce this workaround- they would just fix the problem (which is one of many), so no announcement would be needed as there wouldn't be a problem that needs fixing.

As it is, it's been covered time and time again in the forums. A bit of looking or a quick search of the forums using the Advanced search will bring up posts relating to the problem.
