Running BOINC 5.2.13 and Rosetta as the only work project under Windows XP Home Serv pack 2. Machine boots for the first time since BOINC was installed. Windows starts, BOINC gui app appears breifly (2 seconds or so) in its window, minimizes to task bar. Won't close by any means. Restoring GUI and using any of the Windows "close this app" means results in no change. App reacts to other mouse clicks (brings up "about" box, etc), but doesn't seem to be doing any actual Rosetta work. If BOINC works so badly (can't even get past the first restarting of Windows) on the single most-used OS (not the "best" OS or other religious issue... just the one that damned near every machine on Earth runs), why in the world did you guys use it for your project? |

I am confused as to what you are talking about. Plus you have been processing Rosetta since the 21st..... AND I like BOINC>>>>>>> BOINC Wiki |

It is a little confusing. You click that red "X" on the Window and you expect it to end... but it doesn't really. BOINC is meant to remain running, it goes into sort of a dormant state down in the corner (the "system tray" not the "task bar") when you click the "X" to close it. This means Rosetta is still running, and if you want to VIEW it running, you open the BOINC manager and it again refreshes the display with progress on the WUs. This takes a small amount of crunch time away from the work units, and uses it to update the progress every 5 seconds. So, it's more efficient to leave it "closed" (i.e. down on the systray) when you aren't using the manager. If you really want to kill BOINC and NOT run Rosetta for a while, open the manager, click the "File" menu, and click "Exit". This ends the BOINC manager as well as the background tasks that are running the work units. The result will be no work done, and no BOINC icon in the system tray. So, it sounds like everything is running fine, and it appears from your credits that your work is being processed and reported normally. I see from your credit count that you are new to the project, Welcome! And be sure to check out Dr. Baker's Science Updates. He's been keeping us up to date with the work they are doing in his lab and with the project. But running Rosetta@home just might! https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ |
