Thre is no way to delete one's account. I have worked with SETI and Folding projects but this takes the cake. It disables the screen saver. When I force the screen saver on it will not let the display go to sleep. Threre is no explainations available for the BOINC manager display which is different on a Mac. Help get me out of this thing....

You cannot delete your Rosetta account. You can detach from the project and abandon the account but it will still exist on the server. As to the rest of your question, what exactly are you trying to do, and what is happening?

If one cannot detach from this project then be kind enough to say so before one signs up. As to your impertant question it is just as I said. Two process were running and when they run the screen saver will not activate. When I activate it manually, the screen will not go into 'sleep' or 'shut down' as it should resulting in a waste of energy as well as keeping the room fully lit up. The other projects I ellude to both allow the screen saver function and go sleep mode to run properly under normal control of the operating system. The other annoyng thing about this BOINC software is there is no record made available of where things are put when the installation takes place. So I have removed averything that relates to this project and will find another project that is designed to impact my use of my computer in this manner.

You CAN DETACH from the project.

He told you this.

A record of your credits will still be recorded on the servers though...like any other website you ever visit. Just read his above post.

I am sorry if you feel that trying to get enough information to help you is impertinent, but your first message did not provide enough detail to figure out what the situation was.

First, as I said in my original message you CAN detach from the project. In the BOINC manager go to the "Projects" tab, select Rosetta, and then click on the "Detach" button on the left. That will disconnect your computer form the project, but it will not delete your account on the project website. Boinc is designed to work that way so you can attach and detach from projects without losing your credits.

As for the screen saver. You must select the BOINC screen saver in your system preferences under display on your computer as the desired screen saver. After you do that, the system will run the screen saver for any BOINC application that has a graphic display available under control of Mac OS just like any other screen saver. If however you select the option to "Display Graphics" from the BOINC work tab for a running project this is a completely different matter. Displaying the graphic will indeed start a program separate and apart form the screen saver, and that will appear in your system Dock. That display function will be treated by your system as a running application and it will prevent your system from sleeping.

So If you want the system to sleep, you must set up the screen saver in your system prefs, and allow the system to display what ever graphic it selects. When you do this you should avoid starting a separate graphic display from the BOINC work tab, but if you do start the separate graphic you will have to shut it off before the system will sleep. You should be able to set your monitor sleep parameter under the energy saver prefs for the Mac

Since you appear to be talking about the BOINC software in general not about the Rosetta@home project in particular, when you install BOINC, the third screen of the installation process (the one after the licence agreement) asks where you'd like to install BOINC to. The default location is shown (C:Program FilesBOINC). This is where the BOINC software is placed. The only file that gets put elsewhere is boinc.scr which gets put into the Windows folder (eg C:WINDOWS).

The uninstaller should delete all of these files.

You are partly correct, but it is a bit different on the Mac. There are a few other files that get put in other places, and most of the BOINC files are placed in the Library folder on the startup disk.

Let me ask then, out of curiosity, on the Mac, isn't it possible to uninstall the same way as in Windows? When I run the uninstall program from Windows, it cleans up everything (except some things in the register editor, where you sometimes have to remove things yourself or run a program that can removed traces of programs not longer existing in your system), I can't imagine that Mac OS's don't do the same?

And one step in the Windows installation of BOINC is a question page, where you're asked if you want BOINC as your default screensaver, which I always answer no to. Doesn't it say the same in the Mac installation?

Screensavers are set in the OS system, and setting it to be none is the way to do, when you don't was the room to be lit up while crunching.

Yes the Mac is similar, but there are some "receipts" that are created by the system. Those are not removed by the uninstall because they are not created by the BOINC installer. If those files are left in place they can interfere with future attempts to re-install the software.

Also on the Mac it is possible to install BOINC so it will run for all users of the machine or just a single user. This can confuse things as well because files are put in different folders depending on how you install the software.

In this case I think the user is trying to use the display function in the BOINC work tab at the same time as the screen saver. The Mac will view the display window as an active program. It also may be that he is trying to display a single project or wants to be able to switch them at will, which the system is not designed to do.

I can't really tell what is happening. He became irritated and left before I could help him.

I run a lot of projects on a number of Mac systems, and the screen saver works just fine. Depending on the settings for system sleep and monitor sleep, you get different results. Many people are not aware that these setting are separate.

Thanks.

Yes, some people are easily annoyed.

I've just bought an iPod, and I love it as it's soooo cool, and a friend "warned" me about the "iPod-effect" so the next time I'll buy a new computer, I'll buy a Mac, as it's soooo cool. And I think I will! :-D
