this is a consistent turbo boost problem for me. I stopped oc'ing. Get easily agitated and wasnt working for me. Now im faced with this.

I am not sure what OC'ing you were doing or how you stopped, but I saw some BIOS settings on one of my machines that allowed me to select the standard turbo mode or make manual adjustments that controlled core multipliers.

The BIOS "AUTO" or standard operating mode would TURBO one core. For every additional core that the CPU tried to "TURBO" the maximum turbo for the cores would be dropped by 100MHz until it dropped to the max frequency mode.

When the CPU detects that it has reached a high enough temperature, regardless of cores running, the turbo is disabled by the chip itself to avoid damage.

Your i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz seems to have a standard maximum turbo frequency of 3.9GHz.

I would expect the default settings to turbo 1 core to 3.9GHz, but if you loaded down a second core, the max turbo frequency would drop. I don't know if the first 3.9GHz core would drop back to 3.8GHz or continue at 3.9GHz.

Hope this helps.

I know that my bios doesnt have this option. But on the cooling note the Noctua NH-U12S can run full rpms and drop my cpu 15 degrees without making a sound. Supposed to get some ARCTIC MX-2 in the mail today. To bad I only have one awesome heat sink. Should get to about 40 degrees, its at 50 now, was at 65. Mobo does fan control setting.

I remember one time they said running at cooler temperatures creates better results. Then I read a old cpu engineers google post about how it makes absolutley no difference. Any ideas on what to expect? I didnt care for the longest but thought I came across a document on intel when I was updating chipset and hard drive rapid store, something about keeping the cpu below 40, who knows.

Maybe I didnt read it exactly clearly, and maybe I can manually set my standard turbo boost see if that helps. Another day another dollar. The thing is, I cant overclock this cpu no matter how hard I try. I did have success with overclocking the turbo and that is it, I just wanted to protect my system. But 3.9 is better than 3.7, gotta catch em all.

I have an air cooled i7-4790k running Linux64 with temperature monitored by xsensors and it hums along at 75 degrees C.

I have a SkyLake 6700k liquid cooled that stays below 50 degrees and I think the early H170 (non-OC) mobo has some stability problems running Win10.

I like the liquid cooled systems very much for temperature but I have not made system changes to a liquid cooled system yet.

Intel has a Power Gadget utility that seems to imply that you can run the CPU much hotter than I thought.

I was a member of gpugrid.net for a long time, their members are the best when it comes to message boards in all of boinc or folding @ home in my opinion. Ask the most random question and they will do their best to answer it. So one day the topic of liquid cooled vs air cooled came up and the consensus was a liquid cooled system will given time eventually leak. Otherwise I would have definately tried my hand at it, to much buzz surrounding it not to. But besides that I have absolutely zero experience with liquid cooling.

I've spent a couple of years fiddling (very badly) with OCing, but I use AMD so wouldn't presume to comment on Intels.

But on cooling, I persisted with air for a long time - graduating to an Arctic Freezer 30 (similar to your Noctua). It ended up looking like an elephant balancing on a beach ball.

Eventually I overcame my reticence and took advice to switch to liquid cooling. I got a local guy to fit it for me - he didn't have much experience with water and was as reticent as me tbh. On completion he called me and I came round to look at it. Both of us went "Holy ****" and wondered why'd we'd been wasting our time for so long.

Given time, it may well leak - but unlikely given the build quality. Given a tenth of the time, an air-cooler will get clogged and inefficient while sitting directly on top of the CPU. If nothing else, the improvement in airflow within the case is a selling point of liquid cooling even if it didn't work at all - which it does better than any air-cooler anyway.

I wouldn't think too much more about it. Just save up.

Well I added the artic mx 2, didnt do much but drop it a couple of degrees actually, where max was like 55 or 6 not its 51, get alot of around 48. I did have some cooler master thermal paste on their from a aftermarket cpu, must of not been such bad stuff. Plus I put a pretty thin application as to be on the safe side. Bill Gates quote about success being a lousy teacher haunting my intall. lol peace
This also doesnt conduct electricity so its not like liquid silver or anything. Gotta protect the investment.

While I started rosetta@ home in what looks like october of 08. I found this after switching up accounts, but didnt keep old account long enough to gain any significant points. Having about 8 years of boinc experience, I knew that all the stuff I read and heard would come in handy. This being said I heard energy conservation on world community grid was the most cpu intensive task on boinc of fah. This intrigued me but I could personally never tell a difference. So I ran fah rosetta and wcg writing down all of my cpu temps. wcg made my cpu at least 5 degrees hotter. Anyways, thats where Im at if anyone wants me, Name: JohnMichaelMontgomery

well they dont have any tasks to run, pity, I thoght about it and one thing I didnt say, wcg stays at about 40% ram usage while rosetta uses at least 20% more, this is on 12gigs. So technically rosetta@home is the most resource hungry project, without counting gpu's

You've got to be pretty pleased with that tbh 4-5deg, up to 7-8 is impressive just from using better paste.

Like you, I find WCG runs way hotter, but uses a lot less RAM. I'm sure it ran cooler a few years ago. I have 16Gb ram. Even running 8-cores the RAM demands aren't a problem for me. I imagine you're the same with 12Gb. Anything more than 8Gb should be fine

Yea im trying to get a couple of people to run folding@home on their laptops, for the fact it uses alot less ram. But so far no one in my family actively folds, credit to them having extremely slow computers and being fine with it. But ya know 6 family members, and parents cousins and such, no ones interested. I did a recent push for two of my family members, my only first cousin on my dad side ran it, but I really dont think hell keep it on knowing him. My brother in law with a i7 laptop said he would wait till I came over and he thought it sounded interesting. But cutting to the nitty gritty, my 1st cousin has a i3 5005u. I started folding on a amd dual core 8 years ago, and this is 8 years newer, and hyperthreaded. It has integrated graphics, and 4 gigs ram. I told him I would buy him a cooler stand if he ran the program. You think he could successfully run fah? maybe set it to use 2 of his hyperthreaded cores or something? Also I am looking for cooler stands, and right now im looking at this which has the highest fan airflow, or cfm I could find. Anyone got something better, cause I personally hate laptops. They are fine if you want to spend top dollar for something you can only upgrade the ram in. But heres the stand im looking at:

Like I said, I dont have any experience in laptop coolers, so if you have one that you love let me know.

Like I said, I dont have any experience in laptop coolers, so if you have one that you love let me know.

I also had an 8yo AMD PC at work, that coincidentally just gave up the ghost last month when its power supply blewXP - not worth getting back going. It's I7 replacement has done 3 times as much work in 20 months as the old one did in those 8yrs.

I don't know F@H but an i3 should be fine. I also hate laptops and agree their internal cooling is pathetic. I have a cooler stand too, for what little extra it provides, but it's so superficial I couldn't recommend one, unless someone else knows better.
