Not exactly an answer but BURP have some kind of file compression for when the WU's are ready to send back maybe can take a look over there to see what is going on

I asked over at BURP and this was the answer:

They are saved as png's and then gzipped.

However, the gzip doesn't do much as the png format is pretty far compressed already.

BURP will probably use png as they're rendering so that'll be the completed scene being sent back.

Just looking around I see SIMAP@Home http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/ are using strong compressing algorithms ?
