I have a lot of questions... hoping some of them don't sound dumb. Do solar panels need to be cleaned to maintain efficiency? (I imagine so) Putting panels on the roof never made that much sense to me. Wouldn't they ideally be better on the ground when cleaning is easier? And if they're on the ground, does it matter where it is on the ground? Wouldn't it be easier if there was a big plot of land where everyone put their panels there and they could share the cleaning and maintenance costs and get some economies of scale since all of that is in the same place? It seems like it would make it easy to sell your 200 watt solar panel if you wanted. I imagine it is nonsense to remove the panels to take to your next home purchase. And this would allow selling the panels without actually having to sell your house. You could decouple the location of your panel and the location of your house. For me, I'm mostly interested in the electrical savings/credits anyway.

For a lot of people, the only land they own is their roof.
Elevating solar panels also protects them from the shade of other objects.

That said, you can decouple the location of your house and the panels.
That's called "community solar," and it often takes the form of co-op ownership or power purchase agreements.
Unfortunately, it's a legal grey area in most places due to the political power of utility monopolies.
Look it up where you live and see if anything's happening in your area.
